I'm tempted to join the KW BC group, but I don't have the gear. Can anyone explain the necessary supplies?
A lightweight shovel, probe, and a small pack. If you ever need to rescue a partner, you will need a probe to locate him and a shovel to dig. Also handy for snow pits. A pack that can carry skis is always a nice thing to have to avoid the need to shoulder skis.
Finally, a favorable avalanche report and open boundary are pre-requisites to pull this off. We'll decide what to do on the day we arrive based on conditions.
Kirkwood offers a number of training opportunities to learn the equipment. If you do get equipment, take time to get to know it in the Beacon Basin. Some of the backcountry classes and tours at Kirkwood provide you with the use of equipment. Most people will want to complete and Avy I course at some point, but certainly not a prerequisite for the gathering day. Assuming we have a low risk day, I would leave it up to Tyrone or Eric to decide whether an inexperienced BC skier should join with the group. West Shore is pretty heavily traveled but deserves respect.
