board and bindings for Nephew..help needed

My nephew's board was recently stolen and I wanted to buy him a new board and bindings. I am looking for help with what to get him.

He's 22, about 6' 2", 170 pounds. Atheletic.

Skill level is unknown, but I would say intermediate. He rides in the NE, mostly park, getting into pipe. I will be bringing him out to Steamboat as well. He said his board was 58cm.

I have been seeing some killer deals on SAC but if anyone could help me out with suggestions I would really appreciate it.

As I am pretty much a freerider these days, I don't have any knowledgable recommendations for your nephew. I would post your question on this forum board http://snowboard.colonies.com/forums/forum/19/
Several members there are very knowledgeable on freestyle products and you should get a good response. Make sure you post his height, weight, and probably his shoe size if he is over size 10.

Thank You Very Much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is that his board was 158 CM vs 58 CM. Make sure to buy him a cable lock for his new board.

Yeah, I read it that way too. A 58cm board would be a hover disc at best...

Good advice on the cable lock. Board snakes abound at resorts everywhere.

Yes, its a 158, back to typing school good on ya'.

I got some good help over on the site. Many thanks. I feel like a fish out of water with buying snowboards. I am so tempted to jump on one on pow days,......

I saw that you might be interested in the board El has for sale. He's a good guy and is an expert when it comes to gear advice.

Thanks, I was going to PM you on that. I just want to get him something good and that he likes. I don't need the best, just something he can use and improve on. Someone else suggeted the Burton Custom board? Any thoughts?
I think you'll be able to get a killer board at a great price from El. From what I have read and experienced the Burton Custom is a bit overhyped and underperforms. Seriously, I would take a look at getting the Headroom. You can ask El specifics if he thinks it's a good intermediate board. Arild seems to think so and he is definitely a gear expert (whore) too, so I think you are solid. If I see El online today, I'll mention to him to pm you.

Hey kill, I spoke with him and he thinks that since my Nephew is getting into the pipe as well as the park, he was thinking that headroom board might not be a good fit. he recommended a k2 Darkside, a good intermediate board that is versitile. I snagged those 390 bindings to go with it. Any thoughts?
El knows what he is talking about. I am sure it's solid advice. I have nothing but positive things about the Rome 390 bindings. I have demo'd the Rome Arsenals and those were great bindings. The 390 is more freestyle specific so it sounds perfect. The Darkside should be a great board for him.

he was huge on the 390's. I think the board will be fine for him. Better than what he had before.
He should enjoy it. El used the 390's for everything last season. I let him borrow one of my extra splitboards and we did a tour on Buffalo pass last season. The 390's performed just fine down the mushrooms we did. Definitely a solid binding

Nice, I would love to see some vid of that! Did you ever ride down by Saddle creek at old steamboat?
I have not. I am hoping to get back on Buffalo Pass. The touring to turns there is ridiculously easy. We went to a spot no one goes to which took about an hour. Mostly due to figuring out how we wanted to get there. The turns were superb. After that I found the main tracked trail which looked good too. So right now I want to go check out more of Buffalo Pass and would like to get out to Fish Creek from the resort access points.

Where is Fish Creek? is that off Sun down side or off the back over by Morning side?
The gates are located off of Mt Werner on the Last Chance trail after doing runs like East Face or North St. Pat's.

There is a gate with some interesting looking touring off of Sunshine Peak too.

I have yet to explore either. Fish Creek being the main one. A few things have kept me out of there.

1. It's backcountry, so I need to bring all my avy gear plus a partner with the same.

2. Fish Creek is notorious for cliffing you out big time. There are a few entrances, lot's of mandatory hucks, and I am not so sure about the landings.

3. Getting out sounds like a real pain in the arse, especially for a boarder. I'll bring my split if I go back there, but I imagine it's still going to suck.

Still, next season I think I am going to check it out.

thanks, i know where you are talking about. I thought that there may a chance they (SB) would get permission to open part of that terrain? I know the area over by pony express is assessable and has nice trees. I haven't been there. I like that area.

I know Fish Creek is in the area considered Fish Creek Falls. Which is a popular open space area. So Steamboat is probably not going to get it. Which is fine by me. The resort is plenty big, and you lose so much of the adventure by putting in a lift in the name of convenience.
Not to mention all the pow get's eaten up if you do that anyway.

Actually I believe if you look at some of the older master plans, there used to be a proposal for a lift in the canyon... not sure if it's still in the plans, and even if it is, any development would probably be very very far down the road since there is much more needed improvements on the mountain. I believe the original plan was for the granola bowl area. Still not out of the realm of possibility, as Intrawest is known for development and that is one of the only useable areas the ski area could really expand too, but I would doubt anything along those lines of development in the near future.

AS new comer, the current plans seems to make sense and will be good. The repositioning of the lift should really help.

Not sure what you mean by repositioning of the lift as there currently is no lift back there... but yes, current Intrawest plans look good. The new 6-pack will be a huge welcomed improvement (although I still think a 6-pack is overkill, quad would have been sufficient, but at least it's something).

Oh and killclimbz, getting out of FC on a board isn't all that bad, don't need a split to do it.
Good to hear about FC. I have no doubt if you know where you are going back there, it's reasonable. Since I don't know for sure I would probably take the split back there unless I am with someone who does know the area. Having the option to split and put skins on can make a huge difference. I've done enough postholing for two lifetimes already.

yes, I meant the 6 pack. I didn't think they were putting anyhting new that would extend access. I didn't even see that in the improvement plan that was approved. Just the regrading and repositioning of that one lift.
