You beat me to it.
No aerial tram during the 2008 ski season. Work on the new one is progressing at what I would describe as a somewhat leisurely pace. Supposedly the new one will be running for the 2009 season.
So for those skiers who have never been to JH, it might make sense to come during the '09 season instead. OTOH, I felt like the mountain skied better last winter with no tram and a few fewer people than it has in years.
One potentially HUGE question is how in the world they're going to do avalanche control if we get a big snow year. Last year, the patrollers could ride the tram first thing in the morning and at the end of the day. This year, there will be no tram to ride. How they're going to safely get to the top of the mountain to do snow control still seems to be an open question. I don't know this for sure, but there's a vague feeling around the valley that we could be looking at extremely delayed openings of major parts of the mountain during big snow cycles.
With that caveat, this winter might be another sleeper if you want to ski JH. You can still get to everything on the mountain that the tram served, it just takes a little longer to ride all the chairlifts. I have to bite my tongue every time I say this, but I actually PREFERRED the way the mountain skied last winter without the tram. It wouldn't bother me enormously if the new one got delayed another season.
So, I'd be happy to serve as Gathering guide again this winter if everybody decides they want to come to JH. Just don't plan it for Christmas, New Year's, President's Week, or the last ten days of March, okay?
