The more tuning and waxing you do or wish to do, the more desirable a dedicated tuning bench becomes.
You can use a typical garage workbench, but then the ski set up gets in the way of other household uses for the bench. One home made option and storable option is to buy a Stablemate
saw horse and bolt a 16" (+/-) by 48" x 3/4" plywood top to it and mount your vises. The also work great for other DIY tasks around the house year round, including saw and power tool supports. A bit heavy for portability, but doable.
For a highly versatile, portable, sturdy and lightweight stand, check out the Tools4Boards Terminator stand
. With the Cinch vise and knobs
, that integrate with the track, it can be quickly adjusted to accommodate any width ski or board (alpine, backcountry, tele & nordic. Future accessories are being developed and will be available this fall.
FWIW, before I got my Terminator, I routed out slots in the top on my Stablemate horse to bolt the Cinch vise with the knobs and that worked very well.
