Compression Stockings For Regular Skiing...

howdy, kidz,

towards the end of the season, i got spun around on a short steep, causing me to hyper extend (rt)/tear completely (lt) my plantaris calf muscle. i was unaware of the tear except for the swelling (some light bruising/pressure discomfort). after 6 wks, the swelling had not subsided so i went to my doctor. he used to be a runner but had to stop cause his plantaris tore (both) from over use/fatigue. he said it'll take a few months to heal and to wear a compression stocking to minimize swelling.

i've been using the compression stocking except when i sleep...swelling is minimal but still present. as i have been wearing these, i was wondering if it could be beneficial to wear the stockings for every day skiing. my theory is the boots (consumer race) compact my calf to a significant degree (it looks deformed when i take my boots off):...would wearing the stocking mitigate the compacting, help blood flow or any other benefits/issue/problems?

i'm usually on snow btwn 4-6 hrs 3x wk.

thx,

bruce marks

Ouch!

I don't have any answer to your question.
But... reading your story, I've gotta wonder
if the fit of your boots contributed to your
injury. A cuff that tight doesn't sound healthy,
especially when you ski that much.

Did the doctor have an opinion on that?

benefits of compression shorts

I remember reading a long time ago that wearing compression shorts was beneficial to athletic performance. A quick search turned up this:
http://www.antibodywear.com/bodyguar...ance-tests.asp

The web site is for a manufacturer of compression shorts but the text is supposed to be a summary of a academic study done at Ball State University. The study indicates that compression shorts are especially helpful for jumping sports. Perhaps this'll help me get down that quad burning bump run w/o stopping :-)
