I haven't been there, but today I spent some time discussing Searchmont with some friends who were there Wednesday and Thursday.
They report there was plenty of snow but the resort wasn't making the best use of it. In other words, grooming sucked.
The weather there, as here in NW Lower Peninsula, was warm/wet Wednesday (high 40's and it went from bright sunshine to heavy rain by about 1 p.m.). I skied all morning that day at Boyne and encountered a modicum of "sticky" snow where they hadn't groomed it the night before. All the groomed was pleasantly slick until it turned to slush shortly before the rain began. My friends say everything Searchmont apparently hadn't groomed much since the big snowfall several days earlier, and everything was sticky from the start of the day Wednesday.
Overnight to Thursday, everything set up with the temps in the teens. I skied Thursday at Schuss with dry groomed sugar on top of the block of ice. Searchmont "raked the ice," my friends said. It stayed glazed and hard all day.
If I were you, I'd consider skiing next week at Boyne or Nub's.
Whoops, I didn't read that you wanted to ski the first week in April. Boyne is closing March 31.
