Note that some of the guests will be bots. Note also, that these are the folks that have visited within the past four hours and haven't logged off when they left. It used to be 60 minutes.

when you looked at where folks were before, a few months back maybe???, you would get a complete listing ---including bots.

Now only registered names. Not a problem really---I could really care less if a yahoo-bot was looking at a profile or the telemark forum, just curious why the change?

Right. So, if you stop browsing around, you will show up on the list for 4 more hours.

I vaguely remember tweaking a setting about this, but don't know if I did it on purpose for this or not. It could also have been part of an upgrade. No real intent to change it that I recall, though.

It was a choice to turn off the "guests" and "bots" listing. Otherwise it's page after page of unregistered users.

Especially with the 4 hour time frame.

I liked the bot listing because it gave me an idea of what people were searching and why Epic Ski was being accessed by search engines.

It made a difference how I titled my Gear Reviews.

Please excuse my ignorance, but WHAT IS A BOT?:
The bots are the search engine "users" who roam about the internet to access information for search engines such as google, Yahoo, etc.......
But don't bots just hit every thread in building up their own index? How can that be useful information?

It isn't like google fires up a bot when you search for "rx8 review". That bot has long ago come and gone.

If I recall, you did it intentionally because folks were typing up long elaborate replies and then hitting the timeout and losing their work.

That was the reason, yes.

Due to popular request, we have turned on the bot's and guest listing in who's online.

We have also also decreased the time that people will be dropped from the who's online list. It was originally 30 minutes but that seemed to be causing some issues with people actually getting knocked off the system when they were in the middle of composing long posts, Not sure what was causing that.

Steve had increased it to 4 hours which caused the huge increase of concurrent people on line at the same time.

The new setting is 90 minutes. If you see the timeout behavior return, Please let us know by posting here or contacting a moderator.

I'm going to need to turn off the bots view..

The last 3 database error runs (that seemed to cause the reboots) have been during floods of bot's and spyders searching the sight.. I don't know if it's related yet or just coincidence but I need so see if might be part of our stability problem. When we try to resolve the IP addresses of the bots (also guests) it might be causing extra load on the server causing the timeouts..

The new stability problem seems to be quite recent and coincides with about when we turned on the who's online bots view.

Bots back on

Since we have been running stable for several days on the new server platform I've re-enabled the guest/bots view.. I have also adjusted the auto refresh of this page from 120 seconds (every two minutes) to 360 seconds (every 6 minutes)

Let me know if you see any problems..
