My apologies

Sorry for the outages everyone.. There might be a few more before it's over however I'm trying to make them planned.

Overnight while a scheduled process was running there was a drive failure. (general drive health checks) IT people will always tell you it's not a matter of if but when a drive will fail.. The scheduled backup had already run so only an hour would have been lost in the failure. The drives are mirrored for redundancy but because it happened late at night I was not aware of the problem until someone called me to let me know. This should no longer happen as we have updated the moderators procedures to include contacting me right away. In my haste and half awake state, repaired the drive mirror and restarted the system, then verified that the backup had run in case I needed to do a restore. At this point I left the system to run but forgot to do a database verify to possible correct any corruption that might have happened while the drive was failing thus causing the second outage..

The dedicated server that Epicski has resided on for the past 4+ years was scheduled to be replaced this summer but now I will push up the switch as quickly as possible to get us off the remaining aging hard drive. and hardware.

Again My apologies..

And here I was begining to believe that Epic was a "perfect world".

Sigh!

As Forrest would say .... "Well, sometimes, shizz happens" ...

Geeze, no need to apologize, Dave--thanks for your tireless efforts to keep this old show on the road!

I must admit, it was somewhat entertaining when the site suddenly and spontaneously posted about nine copies of an unfinished reply I was writing. And then...everything went haywire!

Great work, Dave. We all owe you!

Now get some sleep.

Best regards,
Bob Barnes

I find David's apology incredibly ironic. He was awakened at 5:30 PDT by a call from the team to let him know the site was dead. He had it back up in relatively short order (especially considering the cause) and we were back in business. David, thank you! Your tireless (literally!) efforts here are a foundational necessity for the site.

BTW, this may give some of you an insight into why we are looking to increase funding of the infrastructure. We'd like to move towards a more robust, more commercial infrastructure. That will take more funds than we have been generating, so we're looking for mechanisms for increasing that for reliability and performance. More on this soon...

But, suffice to say that David does a tremendous job keeping this site up and operational, especially in the face of the limitations we've had. Thank you again, my friend.

Geeze... a drive failure is all it was...?

After watching Bob's posts multiply in the 'Three Turns' thread late last night, I just thought it had gotten *so good* that it was developing a life of its own and Post Mitosis was beginning to occur!

Say g'night Dave. G'night Dave.

...the real problem is that I nearly had to do some actual "work"!

Thanks Dave!

Post Meiosis is far more likely on this board, then half the message admixed with who knows what from where.

Just so long as it is next time, no harm done.
