Skiing Music

post #1 of 157

I have noticed that there are no songs out there that are about skiing. Such a shame. But maybe you guys know some songs about the sport we love? Well if not what is your favorite pre-skiing music to listen to. I know that some music just really makes me want to go rip it up. And what is your favorite post-skiing music. I usually like really chill stuff to relax to after a hard day on the slopes. Any particular bands or songs that invoke the urge to ski?

When I was a little kid, they used to play special music on the chairlifts, it was that Bavarian ha-ha-ha music.

Nowadays, for skiing I either like techno dance music, or waltzes!

I think there is a song in Snowriders by Warren Miller that is all about Alpental. Another song by Shawn Colvin is called "Shotgun Down The Avalanche." I can't think of any other ones at the moment. What I usually listen to when I go skiing depends on what I am doing. When racing, bring out the White(Rob) Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, etc. If I'm just out with friends it can be anything with a good tempo.

The one skiing related song that I can think of is "Mountains Win Again" by Blues Traveller. I don't listen to music while skiing, but some great music that I listen to pre/post skiing is:
DMB
Phish
Bob Marley
Sublime
Jack Johnson
Ben Harper
John Mayer
I believe there was a big thread about this a few years back.

The song that I used on my ski video that I made is this:

Anabolic Frolic - Love of my life

It's ont he Northern Lights cd i think? or something?

happy 2b hardcore 4 is where i heard it.

Great techno/rave.

It's on kazaa...

It's a really great song. If anyone grabs it, tell me what you think about it.

You may not like it at first, but I got a dollar says it groes on you.

Just think of skiing as the love of your life...

Powerman 5000 - Bombshell
Rammstein - Feuer Frei
Strung Out - Everyday Game
Transmutator - Open Your Heart
The Vandals - Change the World with my Hockey Stick
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole

When I'm in "Ski relaxed and live to see another day: mode:

Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel
Eve 6 - Promise
Eve 6 - Anytime
Dirty Vegas - Days Go By
Sasha - Xpander
Orbital - Halcyon & On & On
J Ralph - One Million Miles Away

Those are what are currently on my MP3 player's internal and removable card, so that's what I was listening to at the end of last season.

accually, there is a song called "Snowman" by XTC. its really about a man+womans relationship, but you asked; its pretty good.

i still prefer KSMT in summit county and a tape filled with creed, matchbox 20, pod, foo fighters, pearl jam and soulhat everywhere else while i'm skiing.
usually, i lose out to the bar or restaurant on the music choice skiing, but while i'm skiing; it's me, my music and as much snow as the big guy upstairs wants to rain down on me.

I had a guy work for me on a ski school who was an Olympian('56) with his brother. They released an album (late 50'- early 60's) called "The Gentlemen Skiers". Lot's of funny songs that most would consider hokey by todays music. But if you get a chance, it's good for a laugh!

Paul Wegeman was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame a few years ago,as were his brothers and father. He is living in Colo Spgs.

As for music preferences- just about anything will do- it's a mood thing.

Well,
I have in the past listed my favourite songs that I sing while skiing, but as for songs about skiing, here's some thoughts:
Tweeker - Darren Flight (OK, it's about a snowboarder)
Snow Blind Friend - Steppenwolf
Climb Every Mountain - Julie Andrews

I could go on, and I probably will, but that will have to do for now.

Alpental...exactly the song I thought of when I saw the first post here. Maybe the only song that talks explicitly about skiing, however, not the only one that captures the essence.

If you like jazz there are a few CDs by the Rippingtons That Russ Freeman Coposed with all the emotions that come with this great sport. For example, Curves Ahead with songs like Snow Bound, or Aspen. Also Black Dimond with cuts like Big Sky, Deep Powder and North peak. Give them a listen. I think you might like them.

Keep those snorkles handy

"it's a lovely day today"

My instructor used to hum it on the lift all the time...

I saw a String Cheese Incident gig in Whistler a few years back and they had a song which went "Waiting for the snow..." or something like that.

It sounded pretty good to me at the time. Everyone in the room was smiling anyhow and I think it was because of the music

Although it's about taking the school ski bus to Alpental, the song title is "Lift", by the band Brad, off of their Interiors album.

Here's a link with a sound clip.

Ah...yes! Ski music. I often have my ear buds in when cruising. Sometimes certain songs have a way of inspiring me or psyching me up for a full adrenaline pumping line. Some songs played at a special moment on the mountain continue to bring me back to that place in time when heard at a later date. I remember handing a cued up tape to the tram driver at Jackson Hole with the simple instructions of "Play this, LOUD!!" The riders were then treated to the pumping beat of Def Leppards "Let's Get Rocked". It was totally cool! It was a killer day with freshies falling while we rode up in anticipation. You could just sense the excitement. Everyone left that tram completely energized. Other favorites include: Queen:"Ride the Wild Wind". AC/DC:"Razors Edge". Tom Petty:"Free Falling". Eddie Money:"Two Tickets to Paradise". Wagner:"Flight of the Valkries". David Lee Roths:"Skyscraper","Perfect Timing" and "Livin' in Paradise". While listening to "Livin' in Paradise", It's easy to dub in the word "Skiing" for "Livin'". So the revised sing along lyrics go: "This must be just like skiing in paradise,...and I don't wanna go home". Oh yeah, just about anything by Billy Idol! I know I'm Old School but that's where my heads at. sundog :

speaking of David Lee Roth, if I'm doing bouncy little powder turns, "Just a Gigolo" always seems to start up in the background!
post #21 of 157
Speaking of the yellow bus taking Brad up to Alpental, when I was a school bus driver I drove a charter up to Ski Acres. Since they wouldn't let me ski (hated that) I brought my mandolin and sat in the bus playing all day and made up a tune called Yellow Bus.

Don't know if you've ever heard it, Download "Super Skier", by the Chad Mitchells Trio. I first heard it in a Glen Plake movie and It is a great Hokey Ski song. Did I mention its a little Hokey?
post #23 of 157
Yea, there was a discussion about this a long time ago. I listen to music when making turns a lot, MP3 players are wonderful.Well, I do have about 500+ CD's. I really need to get one of those MP3 jukeboxes!

The tune list varies, but some that come to mind; Phish, Ozric Tentacles, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock; Stanley Clark, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Walter Trout and the Free Radicals, Fat Boy Slim, Prince, P-Funk/Parliment, Blues Traveler, The Beat Farmers, Stevie Ray Vaghn, The Thunderbirds, Albert Collins, Genesis (older), Oingo Boingo, The Art of Noise, Yello... :

Quite a lot of the music I have isn't for skiing, but it might be played on Dr. Demento! Tunes like "Bald Guys (Getting Hip)", which is a bit "close to home" for me... :

Just for fun, I searched for "skiing songs" on google and found this:

PickleHead.Com Faust and Lewis

The album is called Powder Party

Song list:

* Skiing Bums #1
* Powder Party
* Alabama Skier
* Skiing Bums #2
* Terrified Skiers on the Bunny Slopes
* The Ski Line Song
* Skiing Bums #3
* Psycho Skier
* Snowball
* Skiing Bums #4
* Simon & Skifinkle
* Skiing the United States
* The Blue Square
* Skiing Bums #5
* I Lika Da Snow

They're not together anymore. Heard they were popular in Aspen and Summit CO for a while, and I never got the chance to see them... Anybody got that album? Might have to order it for EpicSki sing-alongs...

Also in the Jack Johnson - John Mayer genre would be Howie Day. I just downloaded a bunch of his stuff. Not Bad.

SRV - Voodoo Chile, I don't know if there is a better ski song.

Isn't Def Leppard's Animal about skiing?

A wild ride, over stony ground
Such a lust for life, the circus comes to town
We are the hungry ones, on a lightning raid
Just like a river runs, like a fire needs flame
I burn for you
I gotta feel it in my blood
Oh whoa
I need your touch don't need your love
Oh whoa
And I want
And I need
And I lust
Animal
And I want
And I need
And I lust
Animal
...
