So I love skiing so much and have done it since I was 6 years old - I'm now 24. This love has followed me through life and now I am in my final year at Uni and writing my last report on skiing. It would be really great if people could answer a few questions for me in as much or as little detail as they want so I can write an awesome report.

The questions are below and I want to thank you so so much in advance for any help you can give me.

Thanks, Kate

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for?
2. Why did you take up the sport(s)?
3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports?
4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why?
5. What winter sports brands do you know but don’t buy, give reasons for why?
6. What influences your choices behind the brands that you purchase?
7. What advertising do you see for these brands?
8. What factors would sway your decision on which brand to purchase?
9. What winter sports events are you aware of, do you attend these events?
10. What are your other interests, including other sports?

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for? Ski 33yrs
2. Why did you take up the sport(s)?Taught nabors to water ski and then they bought wife and I rental gift certificate so had to go. Loved from lst day
3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports?Love skiing, when boarding started I did not like dirt bags with filthy mouths etc., however now boarding is more main stream and I ski/ride with the others often.
4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why? What works for me. I have Nordica boots because they fit well. Fisher and K2 ski's but have skied on Atomics, Rossi's, Solormons, Head, Bro, Nishizawa. Poles are Scotts but have owned Kerma's etc. Have DaKine gloves for my real cold weather glooves.

Awesome report for what?

at age 24 I'm going to assume you're well out of Uni and now in the work force, correct?

so, what are you compiling data for? and more importantly, do you really ski or is that just a line you're using to lure in some genuine skiers to aid with your "awesome report"?

just curious...

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for?
- Ski for 14 years (from the age of 3 to the age of 17 which I am now).

2. Why did you take up the sport(s)?
- I began at 3, so my parents obviously had influence

3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports?
- Skiing has many more sides to it than snowboarding, IMO snowboarding is kind of boring if you do not know how to have fun in a snowboardpark..

4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why?
- Fischer and Atomic and Völkl, Fischer because I like the fit of their boots and because I love their FIS SL ski. Atomic because I love their FIS GS skis. Völkl because Mantra is a great offpiste ski.

5. What winter sports brands do you know but don’t buy, give reasons for why?
- K2 (Never skied K2 before and I'd rather stay with my familiar brands). Salomon (Hate their ski's - my dad has the Crossmax 10 and I really hate it). Dynastar (Been thinking about their offpiste ski's but I like Völkl better)........ Head (I'd like to try these - probably just because Bode loves them) ... Blizzard, Nordica, Stöckli (Almost never represented in the world cup so I probably do not think of them very seriously - maybe I'm wrong )

6. What influences your choices behind the brands that you purchase?
- Actually I think of who uses them at the world cup though it sounds very naive and stupid to think this way - also I try the brand to see if I like it of course..

7. What advertising do you see for these brands?
- Just the advertisement from the world cup and the olympics etc.

8. What factors would sway your decision on which brand to purchase?
- If I was told that I was missing something from another brand I would probably demo this brand and see for myself..

9. What winter sports events are you aware of, do you attend these events?
- none - none

10. What are your other interests, including other sports?
- Computers, School, Music.. Soccer, Football, Basketball, Waterskiing.

Hey Grook, where do you ski. How are prices now, I know dollars not worth anything. Was in Copenhagen in June, loved the city.

What kind of university would accept a paper that uses this kind of ridiculous solicitation?
This "person" is lying. I wouldn't waste your time answering.

Hi,

Thank you so much to the people that replied.

I am not lying about this being for University - I go to Thames Valley University in West London and my dissertation is on Sports Promotion within the Winter Sports industry. I chose this subject because as an avid skier I am trying to get involved with the Olympics in Vancouver once I graduate (I am currently sorting my Visa out) and I thought if my dissertation was about something I am passionate about then I would enjoy doing it more and be able to use the information I gather once I graduate.

I do love skiing. I mainly ski in the French Alps, I did a ski season in Val D'isere about 4 years ago, but keep going back because I have friends working there. I have also skied in St Anton, Valmorel, Avoriaz, Meribel, Corcheval, La Plagne, Flaine, Lech, Zurs, Lake Louise and Sunshine Valley in Canada - beautiful country.

So that is a little bit more about me, so hopefully it will help convince people that this is not market research.

Thanks again to everyone that has replied, it is a really huge help.

Kate

I'd buy anything that's a good value (if I had the money)

I'd be glad to answer these questions

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for?
I have skied for 10 years
2. Why did you take up the sport(s)?
I first tried it because my older brother did it, and it looked fun. Also, my dad was an ex-skier and I always saw his skis in the garage and I wanted to try it out.
3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports?
I think skiing is one of the greatest sports out there but it doesn't get much recognition because you can't do it all year round, or anywhere near that. It's such a thrill to be in the gates and carving smooth turns. I think snowboarding can be a fun sport, but many (It might even be fair to say most) people do it because they think it's cool. I'm talking about kids I know who snowboard and what I observe at the resorts. However, I do respect the people who decide to do it.
4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why?
I buy Dalbello boots at the store's suggestion, Blizzard skis also at the store's suggestion, and Scott poles and gloves at random pick. I wear an Eastern Mountain Sports jacket because it was on sale and looked good quality wise. I hope to buy a pair of Atomic skis in the future because of their reputation and their support in the pro circuit.
5. What winter sports brands do you know but don’t buy, give reasons for why?
I don't buy Volkl, rossi, salomon, elan not for any particular reason, just because I know of skis which I think are better.
6. What influences your choices behind the brands that you purchase?
As I said before, reputation and store's suggestions
7. What advertising do you see for these brands?
I really don't see much besides the company's websites
8. What factors would sway your decision on which brand to purchase?
Probably some scientific results or reviews proving their superiority. I'm a scientific guy, and I won't buy something if I think it looks good, flashy, or has good ads. I want quality and good technology in my skis.
9. What winter sports events are you aware of, do you attend these events?
I'm not aware of any events except the Olympics and some pro races but they're usually too far for me to get to. I would go to any pro skiing event or Olympics if I could, but I haven't had the chance yet.
10. What are your other interests, including other sports?
I like playing Baseball, track and field, Tennis, table tennis, and I like to mess around with computers and electronics.

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for?
Ski, 43 years

2. Why did you take up the sport(s)?
My parents made me.

3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports?
I absolutely love skiing. Boarding is fine.

4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why?
Whatever works the way I want it to and is least expensive.

5. What winter sports brands do you know but don’t buy, give reasons for why?
Can't think of any on my s### list.

6. What influences your choices behind the brands that you purchase?
Performance. Price.

7. What advertising do you see for these brands?
Magazines, mostly.

8. What factors would sway your decision on which brand to purchase?
As above. If it works the way I want it to and if the price is right.

9. What winter sports events are you aware of, do you attend these events?
I don't attend any sports events. I like to do it rather than watch it.

10. What are your other interests, including other sports?
Music, hiking, backpacking, sailing, camping, reading

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for?
I've spent 16 days skiing. In my life.

2. Why did you take up the sport(s)?
Started dating a girl who's a very good skier.

3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports?
I'm totally addicted to skiing. I've never tried boarding but would like to at some point.

4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why?
REI, Columbia, Salomon, Helly Hansen, Smith so far. It's based on a mix of value, style, performance and dumb chance. The Salomon boots, for example, simply happened to be one of the items the sales guy brought me. They fit, they seemed to be quality boots, and the price was decent - so I bought them.

5. What winter sports brands do you know but don’t buy, give reasons for why?
There's nothing out there I won't buy because of the brand, but price is important of course so I probably wouldn't spend much time checking out Spyder gear or such.

6. What influences your choices behind the brands that you purchase?
Price, performance and style. Maybe I'm silly, but I felt the need to splurge on a Helly Hansen jacket because of their reputation and the style of the jacket, and the fact that I found one online for a good bit off. I honestly hadn't even heard of them until a ski trip this Februaru.

7. What advertising do you see for these brands?
Nothing, really. I had a year's free subscription to SKI magazine from signing up with NASTAR, but other than that I don't really see any ski gear adverstisements.

8. What factors would sway your decision on which brand to purchase?
If it looks good and has good features/quality, I'll look at it. If it's priced decently, I'll consider it. But only if I really need it will I buy it.

9. What winter sports events are you aware of, do you attend these events?
The World Cup of course, Jeep King of the Mountain, a few freestle events, Winter X-Games, Olympics, snowmobile racing... That's about all I can think of offhand. I've never attended in person a winter sporting event, just seen them on TV.

10. What are your other interests, including other sports?
Cars (both watching and driving in races), motorcycles, photography, computers, racquetball, cycling, camping, reading.

1. Do you snowboard or ski and how long have you done it for? About 20 years snowboard, 45 skiing.
2. Why did you take up the sport(s)? My father taught me to ski when I was 6. Snowboarding looked like fun.
3. What is your impression/opinion of both of the sports? I am very enthusiastic about telemark skiing. I also enjoy snowboarding.
4. What winter sports brands do you buy and why? I have purchased equipment made by Northland, Dynamic, K2, Elan, Burton, Morrow, MLY, Uniboard, Nordica, Dynafit, Raichle, Deelux, Scarpa, Garmont, Burt, Solomon, Marker, Geze, Tyrolia, Voilé, Emery, Rottefella, 7tm, Scott, Smith, Leki, Life-link, Leedom, Bollé, probably a few others I can't think of right now. Clothing by CB, Roffe, Nordica, Oakley, Burton, Columbia, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, Wigwam and probably lots of other brands I can't remember. Purchases based on need, availability, quality, price.
5. What winter sports brands do you know but don’t buy, give reasons for why? I've heard of most brands. I don't know why I didn't buy them. I don't need a reason not to buy something.
6. What influences your choices behind the brands that you purchase? Skis - I would probably choose K2 because they have threaded inserts and I can mount the bindings myself (so I won't have to pay a mechanic $100 to mount the bindings ONE AND A HALF INCHES distance from where I ask him to mount them.) Bindings - Voilé CRB is the only ski binding I would consider buying at this time because it releases in all directions, is reasonably priced, and a proven design. The new NTN binding makes me sick to my stomach. Boots - Scarpa, Garmont or Crispi. Because I like a boot that flexes at the ball of the foot.

There is no snowboard bindings currently in production that I would want to buy. I think every snowboard brand makes a board or several models which would suit my needs.

7. What advertising do you see for these brands? I get Ski magazine, and see ads for K2 there. K2 has always had great ads, but the campaign portraying K2 skis as an American icon, launched in conjunction with their shift to off-shore production made me sick to my stomach. I don't see many ads for Voilé, Scarpa, Garmont or Crispi.
8. What factors would sway your decision on which brand to purchase? Sponsorship.
9. What winter sports events are you aware of, do you attend these events? I am vaguely aware of some of the venues/courses that are regular stops on the Alpine circuit. I would have trouble naming (spelling) more than a few of them. I have never attended a winter sports competition.

I have attended the Barking Bears Mid-Atlantic Gathering two of the last three years and I attended Whitetail's Teledaze last winter. I plan to attend both of these events on a
regular basis. I am aware of the EpicSki Academy events which I would like to attend. Corporate sponsorship of any of these events definitely gets my attention.

I also know about the long running annual Telefest at Mad River Glen and another at Seven Springs which I believe is called Telepolooza.
10. What are your other interests, including other sports? I ride bicycles. I have other interests, really I do, just can't think of any right now.

I think she might be asking about purchasing/marketing events

like SIA - Vegas/ SLC's Outdoor Retailer Winter Market

or events like the Toronto Ski Snowboard & Travel Show/Boston Ski & Snowboard Expo

Something to pass the long winter
