USST politicsI think that Bode made the right decision by leaving the USST. Phil McNichol must realize that one size DOES NOT fit all, and he’s not coaching kids, but adults who may disagree with him sometimes and may be right. Although he has the right to keep his despotic ways of running the USST, he will not like it when next season Bode keeps beating his protégés.
I don’t think the USST appreciated enough Bode. He did win the SG globe last season, but I don’t see that being mentioned much.
I see some people post their opinions here and I can’t help it but chuckle. Being naïve or even ignorant is not a virtue. Politics play an enormous role in any ski team and the USST is no exception at all. Sometimes supporting the best athlete takes a back seat to sponsorship deals and even the personal preferences of the coach. Rubbing egos and backstabbing takes a huge psychological toll on any athlete who needs to be concentrating on their racing skills.
Bode got villainized by the press for speaking out his mind and not because of his actions. What he does in his free time is not much different than 99% of the other racers. Who do you think he was partying with? Team members of all teams where right there with him in all the parties and they will continue to do the same always with or without Bode. He’s actually not even close to being the wildest party animal on the WC Tour and I know this because I’ve attended a few of those parties myself.
And when the press decided to make news from some of his statements (not actions) and to ignore his great achievements by a large part, the USST was nowhere in sight to support their star athlete because it was not politically correct and their sponsorship money might have been jeopardized. Yep, the USST is being ran by corporate politics and people without some vital body parts such as spines, testicles and brains. How pathetic!
Racing on his own Bode can concentrate on his goals and not worry AS MUCH about the politics and Phil McNichol’s ego.
