Since my post "best ski resort in Denver" i,with your help ,have chosen Vail .I booked my flights with British Airways today and am now scouting for accomodation(i know it's early on but i tend to like to get things sorted)

Have had a reply from the Lionshead and it seems to fit the bill - next to the lift , short walk for nightlife and they have a two room Condo which suits me and my mate to the ground.

Has any of you stayed there ? if so is it good or should i look for better?

thanks for your help in advance

Keir

I'm pretty sure there is still construction going on in that area. Don't know details, and haven't been there myself.

I've never been a big fan of the Lionshead area. I would try either the Lodge at Vail or the Sonnenalp in the main village.

Stay in the main village for sure. Lionshead is ok for parking and quick lift access but that is about it.

Also look at Gasthof Gramshammer (old-school Vail Tyrolian style, right in the center of things) and the Vail Mountain Lodge (still close, but quiet and small -- we stayed there 5 days in February, and it was excellent).

If that is the one that was there in the early 70's when I was ski bumming thru Colorado and we used to sneak in at night when the one 3.2 bar in Vail closed and threw out our pads and sleeping bags below the stairwell in the basement I can say they have nice basement....

thanks i'll check out vail itself - anyone with any suggestions?

By "Vail itself", you actually mean "Vail Village". There are some good bars in Lionshead (Garfinkels, Bart & Yetis) but all the nightclubs (8150, Fubar, The Club, The Sanctuary, Samana) are in VV.

VV and Lionshead are about a mile apart, so you could walk home when the nightclubs close at 2am if you want to, or catch the free shuttle which runs until 2am. There are also taxis.

Accommodation in VV tends to be pricier than Lionshead. A good compromise might be the Evergreen Lodge ( http://www.evergreenvail.com/ ), a 3-star hotel midway between VV and Lionshead.

In VV itself, as well as what's been mentioned, you could try the Mountainhaus ( http://www.mountainhaus.com/ ) or Apollo Park condos.

cheers Martin

well a 1 mile walk never put me off a good night and i'm sure besides the shuttles there is cabs to be had - your right though it's the clubs i want so i'll look at the accomodation at vail village

Can't wait - At least i'll get some skiing in this summer at Saas Fe but i must admit i'm looking forward to my first trip to a US resort

I've always preferrend Lionshead over Vail Village.

If the Lionshead Lodge is the new place that they were working on when I was out there in March, I'd definitely stay there if it's open (Vail claims it'll be ready by the beginning of ski season). Many (if not all) of the units are going to be ultra-luxury condos. And it's about 100' from two major lifts.

You're probably thinking about the Arabelle.

This makes me wonder which lodge you are actually referring to.

There is the Lodge at Lionshead, which is across the street from the LH parking structure, between the Pedestrian Mall and the Ice Rink/ Library. This is a 3-4 minute walk to restaurants and lifts.

There is Lions Square Lodge, which is adjacent the skiers bridge which brings you to the base area. This is a 2 minute walk to restaurants and lifts

There is the Lionshead Lodge, which is the lodge across the street from the South end of the I-70 Pedestrian Bridge, at the intersection of Lionshead Loop Rd and the South Frontage Rd. This is about a 5 minute walk to the restaurants and lifts in Lionshead.

All of these have access to the FREE intown bus route which will get you into Vail Village in about 5 minutes. (you may have to walk a few hundred metres to get to a stop)

Traditionally, LH does tend to be cheaper in cost of accomodation that VV, and the restaurants aren't all bad, but they certainly lack the variety of VV. As Martin Bell pointed out, the clubs are all in VV, mostly along Bridge Street.

There are several new properties being developed, and some of those are getting close to completion. Depending on what time period you are planning your trip, you may find some nice deals.
