Hello all- Has anyone been to the basin lately? I'm hoping to get a day in this week and am just curious how it is after the past storms. Thanks
post #2 of 25

definitely worth the trip!

Sunday- a little crusty on the groomed, 6" of dry powder on the east wall. On Sunday the whole mountain was open, even though the web site said Pali was closed Should be softer everywhere tomorrow with warmer temps predicted. I'm going tomorrow!

I can't believe they have everything open- I love the basin! That sounds perfect, wish I was going tomorrow but I'll have to wait for Thursday. Let me know how it is tomorrow if you don't mind! 777's or 6*?

A-basin site says that Pali will close after today? They seem to close the Pali lift on Wednesdays and I have Thursdays off. Oh well, yet again no bumps for me. I was really hoping for one more soft snow bump day. Enjoy the Mt dp and let us know the conditions. I'll prob go up and do some runs even if Pali is closed

Don't despair- the Basin is still going strong!

There seems to have been a fair amount of misinformation on the A Basin website of late. I skied there today- clear skies, great conditions, Pali completely open with the lift still running when we left at 3:15. The East Wall was open to hike above the upper traverse (not from the North Pole access gate) until mid afternoon. There was one climax slide visible all the way to lookers left on the wall, farther left than the usual chutes are skied there. I have no idea if Pali or hte East Wall will close tomorrow, but they seem to be deciding on opening day by day. I am sure that they are very gun-shy after the tragic slide in May 2005, and are more cautious about rapid warming of the snow pack.

Conditions today were really nice- corn on a firm base, great carving conditions. The run outs could get kind of sticky and grabby in the afternoon, but I had a great day!

Hwy93- I was on my R:ex's, but there were lots of people on slalom skis. the corn wasn't very deep or slushy, so you may prefer the 6*'s, but there were lots of people on fat boys, too.

I'm thinking the Wave Spice is the ski for my journey
But I'm more concerned about packing the right clothes.
I'm guessing go light.

Don't guess!

Looks like you could be in for some slushy ... it's supposed to be 85 in Denver over the weekend. It will be great fun!!

Wear lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of waterproof sunscreen ... and reapply constantly. You'll still get burned, but it will help.

Pali lift is closed and, given the weather coming in, will probably not reopen this year. The upper East Wall is closed as well. The lower East Wall and Land of THe Giants is open in the morning and closes early secondary to wet slab activity on the upper wall. It didn't get below frezzing Wednesday night and I doubt it got cold last night. It was almost 60 degrees in the parking lot at 2pm.

Go early and stop early. It is very slushy on the flats and eveywhere, really. You had to pole to get back to the Lenawee lift. True Beach weather. Sunscreen early and often - as A-Basin says "We like our bacon crispy, not our friends"

Yesterday (May 10th) was one of those spring days that made me proud to be a Coloradan! The snow at 9:30 was incredible! I was in a t-shirt, no gloves, by 11, bloodies on the deck at noon, and finished the day on the beach!

Right on hwy93, that's the way to ski in May.

June 3rd is the advertised closing day.

The Basin was nice early this morning. I was there for first chair and never did catch up w/TrekChick...bummer! I talked to a couple of different people and one said he heard the Basin was staying open 'til the 11th. But given the work that they have planned, unless they get a big dump, guessing the 3rd is the day. Lots more people partying than skiing!!

No????? : : : Hmmm, I hope she made it. I would think with Povi not open, you would really have to go out of your way NOT to see someone.

Phil, probably my fault. We exchanged cell numbers and I copied it down, then forgot to load it in my phone so I couldn't call her from the hill. Dumb dumb dumb....

I made it there but wasn't on the chair until nearly 10:00.
My cell phone worked int two places and only if I stood on one foot and held my right ear with my left hand.
I really really wanted to meet up with you Sugarcube, and I even brought the butt rub as promised.
I think our biggest downfall was relying on technology and not planning a meeting place at a certain time.

I took a few pics and had a great day. Left around 4 with my legs having enough in them for Sunday.
All in all great spring skiing!
But true sadness for not having planned better to meet SC.

Hey, you made it, and you had a great day, and that's what matters most!!

I know what you mean about standing on one foot, etc. I tested my cell reception a couple of times by calling Uncle Louie, and it was the clearest at the base and not bad at the top of Lenawee.

It sprinkled off and on here in Dillon in the afternoon--I was hoping it was snowing at the Basin!

Snowed for about 20 minutes, but not enough to know it by the coverage.

Sunday looks like a good day for some turns and grins
