The other day I joined 3 buddies, Sam, Christine and Dan doing the first 2 days of the Haute Route in one – Chamonix to the Trient Hut. The start down from the Grand Montets was refrozen sh1te, followed by a steep start up the Chardonnet
Dan Skinning up, notice the need for harchisen
The second part of the col du Chardonnet is just a sun-baked slog. At the top you have two cols to chooses from, higher and lower, both in the same condition, we opted for the lower, as it needed less rope.
It would have been possible to sideslip unaided…just, but with the present company an abseil was much easier.
Just as short traverse round the Saleina bowl behind the Aiguille du Argentiere (left) and Aiguille du Chardonnet (right) to the Fenetre du Saleina
Looking back where we had just come from.
Just a gentle decent to the Trient hut. The rest of the crew were staying the night, skiing to Champex lac the next day…not I, I had to walk back across the Trient plateau and the col du tour and down to le tour
My last view of the Col du tour. At this point I was skiing knee-deep slush, needing to stay above 20kph to avoid sinking completely.
Only 4700 feet of climbing but over 20 km of skiing, by the end I just lay in the Vormaine car park and waited for my buddy Rob to fetch me.
