Looking For 2004 PE's 169

My brother really liked my old PE's. So he wants to buy a pair. The 2004 version with only 80 cm underfoot. Anybody got a pair or a lead on a pair?

Pair of 179's on eBay right now. I was interested but the bid is up to $199 already with 10 hours left. Ended up getting some 2007's this morning on Steep and Cheap for $207.

Have you tried both? How different is the 2007?

I like my 2004 and won't give it to my brother. He wants the 80 mm waist for better mogul performance.

if you want better mogul performance get a mogul ski if you want a great all mountain ski that rips in the bumps get the new PEs on SAC right now.

I have not skied them both. Bought the new ones based on recommendations from here. Was intrigued by the older ones with only 80mm waist, but figure that I can easily adapt to the extra 5mm (only 0.195 inches) and get a new ski for the same price as the older model.

Good luck with your search!

PE's

I ski the 03-04 model in a 169 and the 179cm and I LOVE them ! Nothing I have tried has given me the springy, lively , FUN factor of this ski. I have not tried this years though to compare, but so far the older version rips... Ski mags don't rate the 06-07 model as good as they did the 03-04...

Glade Mover -

Don't try to compare ratings from year to year. Everybody's skis are getting better so a ski that rated very high in 03-04 would rate lower this season. The current PEs are damper than the older model but make up for that with vastly superior edge hold on ice & much better powder performance.

Is the silencer really exactly like the old PE? What happended, did they have a lot left ocer and redo the graphics and the name?

Rio, why such better ice hold? Better powder performane due to increase in width?

The ice hold seems to be from the ski being more torsionally stiff. The better powder performance is a mixture of the ski being wider plus the long reverse camber tip. See the follow thread for an explanation of the PEs short running surface.

Rio ---

I will read and compare ratings for skis every model year. In fact the older PE of 2004 kicked ass over the lower rated 2007 model. K2 changed the tip, waist, tail sizes from the 04's 113/80/104 to the current 07's dimensions of 118/85/109. That said, these 2 skis will ski differently and get different ratings. There might also be changes inside the ski that K2 did that weren't so good. As for ice hold and pow skiing, the 07 might do better ,but maybe the WOW , Fun factor is missing that the 04's have. Do the 07's come around the turn and give the skier that same high mark as the 04's ?
Sometimes it's good not to try and improve on a good thing. Look at the Fischer RX9. Unchanged year after year and it still hits the same high marks, and testers are thankful.
Bumpdad, I'd get a pair of 04's and 07's and compare like I'm going to do. I have still not come across as good as ski as the 2004 PE..... Ski On...

I skied on both before buying my answer is the newest PEs kicks butt a true one ski quiver. Wish they made them longer though.

PE's

Cool video. This next season I''l try the 07's in a 174cm and compare them to my 169cm 04's... I'm 6'1", 190lbs and the 169's are a perfect size for me. I found the 179's not as much fun in the 04 model...

One problem comparing rankings between years is that all the skis are getting better. A ski that might have ranked high one year wouldn't do as well as compared to later years. Pete Keelty's site is notorious for running the same review on a ski year after year until the model changes. They even screw up (as in the case of this year's Gotama) and run a previous year's review when the ski has changed.

As for the wow factor, it all depends on what you're looking for. The older PEs had more pop coming out of a turn. On the other hand the newer PEs just feel more solid on harder snow so the wow factor is provided during the turn, not at the end.

the 07-08 Gotama are falling apart at an alarming rate. Volkl is taking care of most of the problem but still my Black one have been bullet proof for the crap i put them through.
