Yes, it works.
Many mountain guides here have used mixed equipment
according to their preference and to what was programmed for the day (that is to say, what the focus was onto, ascending or skiing down).
I skied with guides who used their AT boots into their normal bindings and skis (namey, Raichle boots into geze bindings)
And with guides who used "downhill" boots into their AT gear
(Lange boots into Silvretta bindings).
As Ant says, AT boots use a vibram sole, most of the time, so, adjustments need to be done, or the release won't work effectively. But some toepieces (marker, I think) are self adjusting as for height...
Ask your preferred shop specialist to set the bindings accordingly.
