I have bought skis with money I made myself. does that count? It is only "once removed" from your scenerio?

Hey that's pretty cool!
Met a guy up at the hill one time who was ridin' a strange lookin' board he claimed was made from hemp! In BC I think (not surprising). Everybody was joking about cuttin' a chunk off it!

I'd love to give it a try, I might start looking into it more. I think it would be a lot of fun. The only thing I wonder (and I have read through some of the stuff at skibuilders.com) is how to actually make a ski that you're going to enjoy? It seems very difficult to figure out how to figure out things like flex, rebound, dampness, etc. to design a ski that matches your preferences and skiing style.

I've been looking into custom skis for a while now, mainly 'cause I want custom topsheets, hehe!

If all goes as planned this summer, I'll be riding a pair of homemade skis next winter.

We want pics! Can you tell us your design specs?

I would have to think that one would experiment with building several pairs of skis before developing something that is somewhat satisfying to ski. I didn't check skibuilders.com, but I wonder how one builds vibration dampening into their skis (add an elastomeric core on top of the wood core?).

FYI: The September 2006 issue of Ski Magazine (www.skimag.com) had an article (pgs 49-54) on building your own skis.

Yea, It would be cool, but realisticly I think Phil has the right idea regarding simply making money and leaving all the R&D and trial and error up to the engineers and designers. Although as a career what a great way to make money! But as far as custom topsheets go I've seen some vynyl overlays for snow boards that were pretty hot that could be cut in half for shorter skis I suppose but somebodys likely making them for skis too. If you want truely custom you could hire a graphic air brush artist that could do something totally wild like you see on hot rods and choppers and such. Sometimes you see racers that have had their helmets done. I think it can run into $hundreds$

it can be as simple as rubber inserts.

Well, no final design specs yet. I'll get to those this weekend, after my Dynamics final exam tommorow. I've started a new thread about this little endeavor: Building My Own Skis (AKA Diversion from Reality)

Call me foolish, call me crazy, but I've built some pretty neat things before for the hell of it. They've always (usually) come out great, so why not mix my engineering with my skiing?

Sounds like Wilbur and Orville Wright. And look what they did! Good on ya' man - go for it!

ugh.. sorry guys.. I haven't been on the forum for ages - business, ski building, florida vacations...

Come join the forums at skibuilders. Its not just the construction we discuss - but repairs, gardening, what Kam will feed us if we visit, trips, EOS snow and much more. Plus those darn freeheelers abound there.

Wanna get scared? Check out Kams pallet skis!
