For anyone that is interested, the concession schools at crystal mountain have all been put out of business starting next season.

So ends an era.

What? Where did you hear that? ... and why?

Crystal Mtn, Washington?

I don't know why yet. I just found out from one of the concession school owners. Er rather ex-owners. Only two remain, CMAC, which is kind of an exception to the rule, and Gavin's program will be allowed to keep operating.

Company-owned ski schools at Boyne USA's other resorts produce millions of dollars of revenue.

Well yes most likely the reason is because of paper pusher's somewhere. I had a conversation with the current Crystal Mountain ski school director earlier this season where he told me he was going to spend the entire summer re-writing the concession school contracts. He told me it was more about quality control than money(yea right). But he also left me with the impression that they weren't going to just shut down the concession schools but rather just make the terms a little tighter for how they can operate and obtain passes for their instructors, etc..

A few years back, Snoqualmie pass tried to shut down the concession schools and the following season, the parking lot was empty. So they brought them all back. This season Stevens Pass shut down most of the concession schools. I don't know what happened, but I do know they had a hiring problem there and many complaining employees about poor management. We're yet to see what will go down there and what will go down at Crystal.

Anyway, like I care. I pretty much decided this was my last season resort teaching. Just wanted to pass the news along to those it may effect.

How are the concession ski schools doing at Stevens Pass?

One way Stevens Pass put the pressure on concession ski schools this past season was to take away their building space. Can anyone give a review of how life was for the concession ski schools there this past season?

Uhm a lot of the concession schools at Stevens closed down. There might be a few left, but I have not heard yet how their season went. One of they guys in our school at Crystal was a carry over from one of the schools at Stevens that closed due to the building close out. He didn't have a single positive thing to say about Stevens Pass, ha ha.

Stevens basically forced the concession schools to close this year. Only Lyons and Olympic are still around and are the conditions which they are operating under are not great.

Bummer... as someone who works at a concession ski school at Summit Central (Snoqualmie Pass, WA), I know our director's primary focus is trying to maintain not just good relations with area management, but also to present a case that our school creates economic value for the ski area as a whole.

My sympathies to any instructor impacted by this.

Actually I feel more sorry for the kids. Many of the kids have been coming to a particular concession school for a while with an established relationship. Also, the price for a multi-week program at the concession schools is typically much more affordable than what the resort can provide, which means many of those kids won't be getting much ski lessons next year.

That's only partially correct.

CMAC (race program) will remain as will

SnowPerfomance (concession school)... kinda odd that not ALL of the concession schools got the boot. Huh?
