Ok, since this post has been around awhile and moved here, I’ll play Bill Clinton and let y’all no what I wear.
First, no cotton anywhere. That includes boxers!
Bottoms: Lycra/polyester wicking compression shorts. I use them for skiing, ice hockey and, working out at the gym, and I swear my legs are less fatigued. I find great deals on them in local sporting good stores.
Mid layer pant: cheap fleece pants that I buy at places like Target. They’re good for lounging around in after skiing as well.
Pants: full length side zip pants that allow me to get in and out of easily. I’m also in the market for a quality side zip shell pant.
Socks: Thorlo light ski socks or above the calf wool.
T-shirt: wicking polyester running/tennis T’s that I buy on sale at the big box sports stores. Both long and short sleeve.
Mid layer top: various weights of cheap fleece that I find on sale in nearly every discount department store.
Shell: a decent quality windproof/waterproof breathable thigh length shell with pit zips and powder skirt.
Long Johns: I have a pair of poly pro and old ARMY wools but have yet to need or wear them.
That’s it. I’m so much warmer and comfortable now that I don’t wear cotton athletic socks, T’s, boxers, long johns, and, yes, jeans under my shells.
Side note: I have seen new and very good quality ARMY expedition weight base layers in ARMY/Navy stores for less than ten bucks apiece.
