Perhaps the technical DH is a subtle indication of what Günther Hujara wants to do with the World Cup: scrap the Super G
Of course, this is meeting with a good deal of scorn from the racing community. Already, racers like Maier, Cuche and Götschl are speaking out against the possibility of eliminating SG from the general schedule.
Hujara is proposing this to "clean up the clutter" from scheduling the WC races. He says that SG would only exist for Super Combined.
Methinks this will not happen, but who knows? The FIS is known to be unpredictable and inconsistent.
My $0.02: the Super G is one of the best disciplines. It combines most of the speed of DH with only one shot at the course - like a mini-DH without the training runs. SG is always a wild-card race, where there's no telling who will win from race to race.
It also gives the speed specialists a more fair shot at the overall World Cup - which is the reason that SG was added in 1982. It was the next permutation of the "Stenmark rule," in a sense.
Removing SG from the World Cup would be a big mistake.
