Panorama-Fernie: 3/18-23 - Conditions ??

I'll be skiing a split week starting at Panorama on 3/18 and finishing at Fernie on 3/23. Can any BC Bears help with current conditions and weather forecast for next week ? Resort site info is good, but not always accurate.

Thanks all - falcon_o aka Charlie

well, last week we had great powder, then spring mush, then rain at the bottom and powder up above, then rain everywhere, then wind. Today it is sunny, and I'll go up after lunch to what is going on up there.

It is spring and tha only thing I can say for sure is we have a fine base. What the surface will be like is anyone's guess.

fernie freeride comp for this weekend is canceled. not a good sign.

bring carving skis and hope for snow

either will need 20-40cm to cover the death crust

you might want to look at this site:

craig and his friends usually give a more accurate report than FAR. He hasn't updated the page in a little while but it should be have at least one update before your trip.

I can see from town that the entire snow pack on Gorby Bowl has slid right to the ground. I heard a piece of the Boomerang also slid. It's about 8°C right now and sunny at 2:00. The wind was brutal up there yesterday, they shut down chairs at times, trees were down everywhere. If this current weather pattern holds, the bottom will soon be bare. But in Fernie , it's not uncommon for things to turn around quickly, maybe there will be snow storms next week. Cross your fingers.

Ok skied from 1-4. One bare spot on the entire mtn. Bottom half spring snow, loose granular, not wet, just loose, top pretty much ice, some frozen corduroy, some smooth as a rink, but really fun on new racing skis. Saw some snowboarders walking.

Cedar Bowl had some little suncups on the off piste which actually were just the right texture to get a grip.

Nothing awful if you are a good mixed condition skier.

Slides all over upper mountain, didn't see one in Boomerang, but Easter bowl slid a bit. All stable now.

A friend was up at Kicking Horse and most of our rain was snow up there.

Of course you can always drive an hour and a half north of Panorama and ski in Banff. I was at Sunshine Village on the weekend touring a press group from the U.K. around, and the most experienced skier of the group said the conditions were the best he had ever experienced, anywhere (and they stay that way until late May).

THANKS ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DEFINATELY APRECIATE the feedback and now have a realistic idea of what to ski. I skiied Panorama, Fernie and Kicking Horse last spring and Sunshine and Lake Louise the year before so am aware of the great runs to be had.

Hopefully the snow gods will be busy next week with a Spring fling. I'll be skiing Panorama 3/18-20 and Fernie 3/21-23 so if any of you want to share some runs let me know.

Thanks again - Charlie

Was there on the weekend and definitely spring conditions. I'd have a couple of alternatives available just in case conditions don't improve.

Lift tickets for Alberta and BC.
buy one, get one 50% off for
Fernie, Lake Louise, Kimberly, Jasper (Marmot Basin), Nakiska, Norquay (banff)
blackout dates for Dec 23 - Jan 7, Feb 15-25, March 24- April 9. and valid Monday to Thursday.
I have a bunch, each one good for one day at that resort, not valid at each hill.
Tickets are $60-80 a day so you can save $30-40 for two people. $10 each.

Skied this morning, snowing hard 2-3' of wet powder at base 4-5 of dense nice powder at top. Good day, which means little about what it will be like in two more days. Springtime.
