All depends on how much you like to ski.:

hey, you need to do some reading comprehension drills. My post was in complete support of you. I agree with almost everything you said in your above post. I can't even remeber the last time i did drills. I push myself in steep and technical terrain everyday that I ski because I belive that that, at my level, is the best way to increase my skills. Going hard and fast in sketchy or technical conditions will expose my technique flaws better than a million drills on a groomer. The whole foundation thing was just saying that you cant toss someone onto a double diamond on thier first run, you have to teach them how to ski first.

While you're having fun with you're latest train wreck, take a break and become a supporter. The least you could do to keep the tracks running.

My comments were not directed at you as much as the other posters. However, I take issue with your comments about precision and technique. I don't lack technique....I lack an interest in using it all the time. I may lack a certain amount of precision in my skiing, but only so far as my reluctance to practice certain things to gain a high degree of repetive precision in them. It doesn't mean I can't do them, or don't know how to do them. If wanted to ski like a carving robot, I could.....but that would scuk.

when does this saga become a banner page comic strip? something like "spy vs. spy."

i see the first frame including our hero in full body armor and face mask, waiting.

he is positioned next to a hand-crafted sign stuck in the snow; the sign reads THROWDOWN TODAY. his man's skis lean upon the sign like two thin assassins. we cannot help but notice the ample lift of those binders.)

a ski lodge and chairlift in the background lend context.

in a two-frame strip we see in the second a vehicle with colorado plates that's left the lot and is straightlining over the snow toward our hero, who has yet to notice his company has arrived.
(but if he turns, the inside wheels of the car lift slightly off the ground.)

that smile is on the face of the driver behind the wheel and we see his clearly marked "head" skis on the rack.

weekly serial?

About drills and practice ...

I don't remember the exact names and places in this story ... perhaps one of you does ... but they aren't important:

A group of hot shot NFL rookies was being shown around camp by one of the vets; after a while they came to a practice field where they saw "player X" running mundane pass patterns.

"Hey", said a rookie, "that's X, the best wide receiver in the league. What does he need to run those patterns for?"

The vet turns to him and says, "How do you think he became the best wide receiver in the league?"

Good point, but your point misses the point of my thread.

I DO PRACTICE. I DO RUN MY OWN DRILLS. THAT'S HOW I GET BETTER.

But they aren't stupid body postioning drills to polish my carving technique on a groomed trail. Gat.

Everyone who has actually seen HS ski in person -- Phil, Epic, iskitoofastforyou, etc. -- has noted that he is a very strong skier. When are you people going to accept the fact that he can actually ski?

I worded it wrong. I ment to say that even if you lack technique in some people's eyes you obviously have techniques, maybe not psia or pmts ones, but techniques which allow you to get down the hill.

not to take sides, and this is neither here nor there, but i've heard "strong skier" used in different ways, including referring to skiers who are maybe more athletic than fundamentally sound, according to people who believe, for example, the backseat is perhaps not the best place from which to ski and who wonder, if only for a split-second, how such an approach might translate all over the hill. HS put up his video as ripping skiing and, when pushed a little, has since backed off and asked that people not judge those clips as emblematic of his larger game.

anyway, "strong" skier is a little vague when "expert" seems to be the buzzword of choice.

jussayin'.

at any rate, that HS can ski was accepted quite awhile ago.

and at this point, isn't this all about entertainment anyway?

I keep seeing the "last page" shown in the index.... and for some reason, I keep hoping it's really the last page....

But it isn't and posts keep rolling in ( I'm also guilty of stroking this poor man's ego, just for a few grins). If anybody wants this thread to stop... all that has to be done is quit posting to it, and let it fade away.

A very simple notion that we have known around here for years...

I stand by the back seat devil's fiddle clip as good, innovative expert ripping. What it loses in the translation to you-tube is the snow texture, and feel for the speed. If I was on a normal groomed trail, it would be terrible skiing.....and I don't ski like that on groomed trails...duh. But since it's in 2 feet of melting, unskied, manky snow on top of no base on a rocky trail...........well, unconventional snow and terrain calls for unconventional skiing.

My overall approach across the hill is to do what works best given the situation, while still turning, skiing fast, not crashing, skiing a creative line, and skiing with personal flair.

Yeah, he can ski.

I've learned it from some reading, learning from others, and watching other people ski. I know what good skiing is in the opinion of the PSIA.....and I take their opinion with a grain of salt, because I've gone further and learned more....

I can adapt to virtually any ski technique within a matter of minutes, because at some point over the years, I've probably already done it, or something close. I have no specific ingrained technique that I stick to, and will change techniques at will throughout a ski run......I constantly pull different techniques out my backgorund, and mix up my skiing. It's called having experience. I will often disregard what others would say is "good technique", and purposely ski with "bad technique", because quite often "bad technique" can be used in an unusual situation to result in great skiing.

I you think working on drills on a groomed slope will make you a better skier, you are sadly mistaken. It won't. It will teach to you make one type of turn with high degree of precision, on groomed trails.....that's not good skiing. The only real way become a good/great skier, is to practice skiing challenging terrain/snow agressively.....period.

For volklskier to say I have 15 years of flawed ingrained techique is downright absurd, and shows his ignorance. For someone to be enough of a volkl fanboy to use it in their name says alot - volkls are the most overrated ski on the market.....number one choice of posers everywhere.
So true, great explaination HS.

There is more than one way to ski good. I would like to see a proficient PMTS'er ski down Devils Fiddle in those conditions that HS did. Your Supershapes would get eaten up. I am not saying that a PMTS'er cannot be a good skier, but it is one structured turn (all be it a good one) but you need more than one type of turn to ski.

Bringing World Cup caliber ski equipment and service to all skiers - from pro ski racers to everyday all mountain skiers and into the...

It would be more accurate to say that a PMTS skier has learned a movement pattern that can be used to produce a variety of turns.

BTW, I wouldn't use a Supershape in 2' of wet sticky snow. I'd likely be on an Atomic M:EX although the Metron B5 does just fine in 2' of wet sticky stuff.

I'm sure he can get down the mountain ok, and surely I'd classify what he's doing in the video as skiing. However, it's not the most graceful skiing I've seen, not even close.

Jeez Magnus you are really missing the point. It's not supposed to be graceful! This guy is an INNOVATOR!!!!!!!

Do have a caddy to follow you around with your quiver?

Have you ever watched a PGA Tour pro extricate himself from a horrible position? It often is an ugly swing. The fact that a guy like Vijay Singh can make an ugly shot left handed is what makes him a champion.

There are dozens, probably hundreds of country club pros around the country that have perfect swings with every club in their bag...on the driving range. The ability to perform under presure in bad situations is what seperates the real pros from the teachers.
Wow. I didn't know when I signed on to EpicSki.com that I was taking sides in a great debate on how one should bend one's knees and flex one's toes during turns. Furthermore, I've read that because I don't pay nearly enough attention to these things I'm mediocre, and doomed to a wasted life of mediocrity.

I like skiing. I go to the mountain to see the peaks, breathe the fresh air and feel the worries of the world slip away as I live in the moment, thinking only about the next turn. I don't really want to turn my relaxation into a job.

I'm not trying to mock the ski schools or people's techniques. I DO think that people who analyze video of other skiers frame by frame may need to be mocked just a little bit.

I'll just keep taking the classes I think are important - avalanche awareness and routefinding! To improve my skiing, I'll try to lose that 15 - 20 pounds!

in defense of magnus, HS is no innovator. If he was actually winning events that put the traditional styles to shame, he could be considered an innovator. Instead, he's a hacky tail-rider defending his incredible overuse of energy as something that is necessary in the given snow conditions. His competitive language wouldn't last a day in the real world. But here, on a forum, he's free to pick and choose quotes and develop the language necessary to try to convince a group of readers that he's some sort of demi-god capable of outskiing an x-worldcupper out of the 'traditional' arena. If he were half the man his jean-wearing self implied, he would actually stand up and enter a pro-am event. Instead, he creates the grobbelers here who hold him on some pedistal of aluminum risers of hard-coreness. Keep it real, HS, keep it real.

I love the entertainment, and I'm sure I could enjoy a day with the thug in jeans, nonetheless... it's just banter. That's all this thread is, banter.
So please, banter away...

Samurai, banter is all this site is. There is very little actual useful information here. There are lots of opinions (...everybody's got one) and there is lots of ego stroking. that's all just banter.

When was the last time you read something here that you either didn't already know, or that you trusted as true? Seriously, you always seem to know what you're talking about...do you ever read something here and say, "gee, I did not know that!"...me either.

Epicski, the land of useless posts.

At least at TGR they talk about BACON.

I learned -- from you -- that New York State (including the Adirondacks, I guess) is not located in the northeast, but rather, is part of the "Mid-Atlantic" region... same as Virginia, DC, Maryland, NJ, and PA.

I don't believe it, but I can honestly say I didn't know that.

I very rarely lie or post any useless blather. They keep count here you know. It's posted in the upper right corner by my join date and location.

I thought the whole point was to contribute to the fire, as most of us do.

(I used to work as an 'Opinions' columnist for a newspaper. My job was not to express my opinion, but rather the opinion that would evoke the most responses to be published, henceforth decreasing the space I had to fill as a writer. get it? A good writer will let the others do the work for him. And HS knows exactly how to lay the kindling.)

HS, if it will make you feel better about yourself and your "style" , and get you to STFU, we can have a ski off. You can even brag to my 10yo how you owned his, 41yo, overweight, out of shape, 3rd year skiing, dad on the mountain. We can do 49'er. Heck, you will probably get 2 runs in to my run.

Disclaimer to spectators: Watching me ski my be hazzardous to your abs, as you may laugh alot.
