Steamboat 3/4-10

I will do a day by day report.

Day 1: We got up. Being excited and still being on east coast time, we were out of the condo by 8 and over to the Gondola by 8:30. First, the condos at Cross Timbers are beautiful, they say they are 200 yds to the slopes, not the case. ours is way too far to walk, but the shuttle service has been great. The one shuttle driver even brought me over to the mart to get my scotch.

The snow: Not as good as I would have hoped a few days after getting 5', but we are making due with what we have. The snow in the trees has gotten heavy due to a couple of days of warmer weather. The skiing in the AM was a bit crusty, but we are following the sun to find softer snow. The best snow we did find was up in the chutes, still light and fluffy.

Gear: (What is a Phil TR w/o talking gear). I started off the day on the Titans which were real good. A narrower ski still would have been fine. I am almost kicking myself for not bringing the Mag SL's but no biggy. I did take out the Seths for the first time in the afternoon. The ski is much lighter and softer than the Titans and not nearly as demanding. I brought some Recons for my son to ski because he toasted his Metrons. Might be a ski to consider for him for next year.

The Mountain: Wow, this place is much bigger than the trail map lets on to be. Even runs that look short on the map, are real nice and long.

Thought I'd add to this trip report, since I'm here, too.

First, the weather is terrific. I'm used to skiing in New England where minus zero plus wind chill is an ordinary day. This blue sky, sun, and temps in the positive digits (above 40, actually) is terrific. I'm lovin' it!

Second, the snow is soft, soft, soft. You can do anything on it. No ice. And though we don't have the famous Steamboat "Champagne Powder," I'm not going to complain.

Great weather + terrific area + good company = a great trip.

Day 2: Another Bluebird day. We took a bunch of photos and I need to find a place to post them. Ty and I explored the mountain more. I also did my obligatory helicopter for the season, it was ugly but I at least got it under my belt.

Day 3: Hump Day. SHH and Bong joined us for the day (they arrived the night before). We had a great time. Blue bird day 3. Believe it or not, SHH will let what little hair he has down if you put a bottle of single malt in front of him. Steve and Bong are both uber smooth skier and were a blast to ski with. Ski Diva got a 2 on 1 private lesson.

Keep em commin. Phil, get back in the woods.

Ski Diva, did you bring your husbands signature so you can do some book signing? Sounds like a blast out there!
"Blast" is the word. The weather couldn't be better (well, a 30" dump would be nice), but the temps, bright blue skies, and sun sure beat the frigid conditions I'm used to skiing in in Vermont. I could definitely get used to this!

Had a fantastic time today with ssh and Bong. Many thanks to them for the great ski tips they gave me today; suffice it to say I have plenty to work on. They're great skiers and terrific guys. A lot of fun to be with.

Hubby's on his national book tour (Go Finn!), so he's busy doing his own signature (I'm only good at forging his name on checks!).

Look at all those smiles! I'm so happy the sunshine is blessing your vacation, if the snow won't. It looks like you're making due with the "terrible conditions":

Keep smiling!

How about that "Sleeping Giant" huh Phil?

Nice pic. Bong, put that helmet on or some sunscreen will ya?

Steve, give him some hair will ya?

The Boat, nice place to be in the sunshine.

A Fat Tire and Nachos at the Tugboat Saloon would be good.

What a difference a week makes. You guys have some nicer weather - it was single digits and in the teens most of my trip last week...pretty cold. but we got a foot + of powder one night...and a few inches the other nights...:

Please tell us about the TREE SKIING!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad you are all having so much darn fun. As others have said, if it can't be powder, let it be warm, bluebird sky days. I did notice you have snow flurries in the forecast though...maybe you'll get the best of both worlds!

We are in for lunch and I AM bringing out the Seths. the forcast was 41 deg, rain, snow showers with NO accumulation. So far it is 30 deg and 5+ inches has fallen. I would love to post more, but we are heading out to get some more turns.

OMFG, what a day. Ty and I went back out in the afternoon and had a blast. We had to start on the gondie and head up to the Christmas glade, it took us three lifts to get there but ie was well worth it. The snow and the trees were perfect. We ran a couple of laps there for a while then headed over to the Pony Express lift. The area there is a pure playground of bumps. trees and rocks. Once 2:00 hit the weather got wacky. The snow started up again and it started as pellets, then wind all topped off my thunder and lightning. Snog was the word for the afternoon, Snog is snow and fog. All in all it was one of our best days of skiing ever. All I can say to Steve and Bong is...you should have been here today.

Yeah, so you could've heard Phil say to me -- when he wanted me to try something -- "Oh, come on. Trekchick would do it!" And like an idiot, I go right ahead and do it!

Actually, it was fun.
I don't know, it does not sound like you had any fun at all today. I am so sorry to hear that...you should just all come home right now, before you get too depressed.

And SkiDiva, are you calling Trekchick an idiot? Ut-oh. Them's fightin' words.
Thatsagirl, are you trying to cause trouble?????

No, I'm calling myself an idiot for being so easily finnagled into doing something that might not have been the best idea.

He'd probably say the same thing to her: "Oh come on, Ski Diva would do it!"

What an operator!

We didn't have you do anything you didn't want to do. Besides, you should have seen her smile when she came out of the woods, she was grinning ear to ear.
