If you are sliding on your back head down, it is like the advice for what to do if you meet a mountain lion: make yourself appear big Flatten youself, spread your hands and legs to the sides, increase your contact surface. Try to rotate. You are in the worst possible positions for sliding. Put the helmet on [img]graemlins/evilgrin.gif[/img]

If you are on your back head up, then pretend you are in a luge competition and steer yourself into the soft snow: at least you see where you are going. Whatever happens to you, NEVER drop your head.

On the tummy, usually the self arrest is much easier, as you can use your limbs more efficiently.

If you are sliding on your tummy sideways (lost only one ski), then make a letter H by spreading your limbs up and down (ideally, get the pole hand and the ski-less boot to point down). Then you can actually even steer yourself.

Actually if you are sideways, you are more likely ot roll than to slide. DO NOT make letter H in that case: you may end up popping your shoulder or hip. If you widen your shoulders and pull your hands in (like a triangle), then your feet will eventually end up pointing down and you will slow down enough to stand up. This will work ONLY if you lost both skis.

Get yourself on your stomach (if necessary) and then do a twisted, mini-pushup with your bottom up in the air so that the only things touching the snow will be your forearms and your one remaining ski (aka sea anchor). This concentrates the pressure on the dragging ski edge, and is much better at generating friction than if you are ineffectually lying with your whole body in contact with the snow. If you can pull off this move, you would be amazed at how much extra friction this generates. While you are going head-first downhill and rightfully worried about your head, at least you are in a stable position, can usually generate lots of drag, and not likely to begin to cartwheel / ragdoll and totally go out of control.

The only problem with this method is that if you get into this position at too high an initial speed or in rough terrain (ie, a bump field), the friction on your ski may cause the binding to release. If this happens, stay in the same orientation, and do the mini-pushup on your boot toes instead of your remaining ski. They will almost certainly be occasionally kicked off of the snow as you fly over terrain irregularities, but try to keep applying as much pressure to them as you can muster.

PS (in edit) - Getting on your stomach with as much weight as possible concentrated on whatever friction generating tool you have available (ie, getting your butt up in the air and stomach off the ground) is exactly what is recommended and practiced over and over again in intro mountaineering courses that deal with self-arrest (using an ice ax, generally). If you ever attend such a course, your instructors will have you initiate practice falls from every possible orientation and then learn to twist yourself to get in the desired, most stable orientation (ie, head uphill if the friction is coming from using an ice ax, head downhill if its coming from your ski or boot toes). Cartwheeling and losing all control is a very likely possibility on the higher angle slopes of mountaineering and the SOP is to avoid unstable orientations (ie, digging in your boots or skis below you) at all costs.

I'm a believer in using pole straps after taking a fall at Crystal a couple of years ago. I was heading for a cliff and couldn't stop in time. I had let go of my poles and could only use my elbows and hands to try and stop because I didn't want to ragdoll. The only thing that kept me from going over the cliff was that I reached up and grabbed the rope that had the cliff sign on it. After I changed my shorts we looked for my poles and found only one. My friend now calls the run "one pole."
