sugaree, where are you staying? do not wait for huge lines if they are backed up behind the 7/11 at the entrance to the Big Cottonwood, we go stuck there for an hour on Friday and turned around and skied Solitude and it was awesome while we were told the crowds at Alta that day were terrible, it was so packed the lot was full and they were turning people away. Are you bringing your laptop? Check Snowbird homepage for Road Restrictions/Closures, that is very important, if road is closed for avalanche work you could be waiting until 9-10 am till it opens then have a very slow crawl up, you won't be skiing by 11am and it will be KILLING you to be sitting in your car.
Powder Skiing - biggest tip - when you ski powder ski with both legs doing the same exact thing, while in regular skiing your legs are doing different things. Keep hands up and weight shift between front and back is so important. Dopes will say sit back, well that is not advice that is what happens and you end up sitting back and up go tips and you go Down in the sugar Sugaree. You will actually find yourself forcing yourself forward. Remember, weight is the same on both feet. Practice on your bed right now, jumping back and forth like some Frenchie in Quebec gave me a lesson many years ago(25) before I skied Le Massif.
Snowbasin is a great place to learn powder. You will have big long lines all day long, although everytime i've been there it has been heavy windpacked powder which is much different and harder to ski than light powder. Go DIRECTLY to the Strawberry gondola and ski that side, it is great on a powder day, don't follow the main runs, this is big mountain skiing, unlike the east, you can ski wherever you want, sweeeet, and they will have it roped off where it is very dangerous, otherwise it is a GO! Keep exploring, don't wimp out and loose elevation by going down the main run, keep running along the sides of the hills and then make another stab at it. Also the ropes and flags will generally keep you out of areas where you can't get out of. John Paul is expert but tight and gnarly on the bottom. Remember Strawberry!! and Don't forget the Olympic Downhill Gondola on top and eat at the Needles Lodge, sit towards the mountain for a perfect view.
ps - you have the best choice of resorts!
