Since this thread came about, I have been very aware of myself and friends skiing. All of my friends use straps. Every single day at least one (that I have witnessed) has had a pole yanked from their hand and quickly recovered (not missing a beat) because of the strap. Without that strap the skier would be hiking up many yards to retrieve the equipment.
Last time I was out, one of my friends had his strapless pole yanked from his hands when the basket got tangled in a thin rope just under the surface of the snow. He would have been super unhappy if he was using a strap.
We also ski in the trees a lot. Straps in the trees is a *huge* no-no. Poles get caught on stuff all the time. I'd rather leave a pole behind me than leave my arm behind me.
I don't know what lollygagging is, but I'm pretty sure I don't do it. I hold onto my poles.
What on earth are you guys doing that your poles get yanked from your hands all the time?
