Schruns Austria

Well its time I gave a little back to this forum. The ski gear reviews have been very helpful over the last couple of years. Jan- Feb this year was my 2nd visit to this area, I now have racked up 34 ski days. We were fortunate that it snowed for a couple of days soon after we arrived although this area was a lot better than some in Europe.
Schruns is the main village of the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg, Austria, in the Bludenz district. Nearby are the popular resorts of Lech, Zurs and St Antion.
The closest main airport is Zurich, from here it’s about a 2hr taxi ride to Schruns. Contact Roland Filzmaier, www.montafon.com/Filzmaier/ , cost about 500 euros for 6 people return.
There is a great variety of accommodation types available through the tourist info centre at Schruns, www.schruns-tschagguns.at
The valley has 4 main ski areas, Golm, Silvrettanova, Hochjoch, Gargellen
all available on the one pass, including bus travel, 13 day adult pass around 270 euros.
Schruns is a good central base for valley skiing, walk to Hockjoch cable car or bus station for other 3 resorts.
Silvrettanova is the only area with a terrain park
There are no official gladed runs.
Wide groomed runs at a good pitch.
Largest ski area, could be affected by low snow depth ie resort derocking not completed, plenty of off piste potential
Great home run, top of resort holds snow and is skiable when other aren’t, plenty off good off piste terrain easily accessible, world longest ski tunnel?
View to Schruns from Wormser Hutte
Highest base, plenty of good off piste terrain with some hiking
Back valley gargellen.Tali
Each of these areas has some great authentic mountain huts to visit for lunch. I would recommend the Kesselhutte at Gargellen and the Wormser Hutte at Hohjoch.
The local beer is great as well, it’s called Fohrenburger.

Local Oddities
In this area people just don’t ski off piste so the freshies last for days.
I tried to arrange some demos with the view to buy some new skis before I left. I contacted the local ski shops with a list of preferred skis that included Volkl AC3 and 4, Head IM82 ,87, Atomic B5, M11B5, etc you known all mountain skis. Guess what
No one carried them, in fact I don’t think I saw an all mountain ski all trip.

Any how I intend to visit this area again its great.

Ahhh, fond memories. Come Saturday 5:30am, my parents used to put me on the ski bus to Silvrettanova to get me out of the way. Now... that's 25 years ago.
