Kirkwood Presidents Day Madness (pics)

Saturday February 17 at Kirkwood yielded blue skies, mild temperatures and nice snow conditions. People on this board often ask, what does it really mean to be a "gaper". Well, I thought I would post myself for a few minutes, camera in hand at the top of Lift 11 to try to give this term meaning...

It starts slowly

And gradually gets more interesting

It eventually turns into full scale flailing

And as the last of the casualties pick themselves up, a new batch quickly arrives to take their place.

After the morning entertainment, we proceeded to the back-side lifts and enjoyed some high-speed fun runs on the groomers. Conditions were fast, especially with our fresh wax courtesy of Maplus (Alpinord). I'm pretty casual about tuning, and have never felt such glide as we had from the liquid wax applied before we left the car. Easy to use and just amazing results.

After a morning on the back we dropped off the saddle to go back towards some lunch. As you can see, the snow on North aspects off-piste is staying nice.

Just a bit steep, but nice

I gotta talk to Chris about this Tai Chi Snowboarding thing :

After lunch, we ended the day in Sentinel Bowl Really nice fast bowl with great edge and snow conditions...and the wax was still working. In a rare appearance, Cirquerider was photographed adding to the Presidents Day Weekend steez.

dunno, but the snow at KW looks nicer than the North Shore...

way to go on the gaper pix. by your pictorial, I'm in the clear!

other'n that, i am a bit bummed that i have now sat out 2 weekends in a row, but only have myself to blame.

next weekend, baby! next weekend! (followed by 3 days out in Utah!)

Great to see the pictures from da 'wood, CR. I did day trips up to KW the past 2 Mondays and had fun in the fresh stuff. This past Monday it was kind of crusty in the early morning but it softened up quickly.

I'll be up there this next weekend skiing on Monday. Forecast looks promising for the fresh stuff.

Anyone going up this weekend?

What a difference a week makes. Kirkwood received 4-feet of snow this week and much more is expected over the next week. Its nuking now. Much more of the steep terrain is skiing nice. I was surprised at how little coverage is on the cliffs and chutes off the Wall lift. Heart looks a long way from skiable and Once Is Enough is a narrow straightline...definitely tough. I finally dropped into Ski School chute today which was soft and nice. Its not as hard as some of the narrow steep chutes in Thunder Saddle and Chutes in Wagon Wheel bowl.

Took the AK Rockets, but skied the Sugar Daddys today. I'm thinking Tuesday we might christen the swallowtails. Winds will be too high on the summit on Sunday.

Hey -- My family and I were in Tahoe that week, and we skiied Kirkwood (for the first time ever) on 2-17! Too bad that I didn't know that you were there -- we could have used someone to show us around!

I know it was a cheap shot but hey, it's the Internet. Ride-on uber carver.

btw, how was KW during the storm week (2/25 - 3/1)?

i rode Squaw pre-storm, then Homewood on Day 1 (Sun 2/25), wrecked my truck on Day 2 (Mon 2/26) then rode Alpine Tues, Northstar Wed, and Sugarbowl Thurs (missing SJ somehow). No hospital air, but plenty of tree dodging on the newly (and finally) christened Spatulas.

All time great skiing on Tuesday that week. Wish I had gotten out on Wednesday as well. Thigh to waist deep shots and everything was in play due to the forgiving conditions. Fresh tracks all day because so few people were able to get there, and new terrain opened through the day.

Skiing this past weekend, the weekday powder was but a distant memory.
