In case you hadn't noticed, EpicSki went over 14,000 members in the past day!

Could AC have even envisioned how large this community would become?

I remember the competitions we used to hold, as we would start getting close to a major number (ie- 3000,4000,5000). People would guess, and some prize would be given to the person most closely guessing when that number individual would register.

Congrats to AC, and all of EpicSki, for having reached this point!

I've been hanging around epic for a couple of years now and still do more lurking than talking but am curious about the history of this site? I've met a few of the current members but have never heard the story of how this has grown into what it is today. Is there an old thread that would give some of use newcomers an insight into the history or would someone consider starting one? This is still my favorite site for all things ski related.

We'll have to have a contest for the 15000 members milestone, since I believe our last contest was for 10000.

Hey,

Pedalbiker has a great idea. There are a couple of original bears around. I mean double digit guys. There should be an effort between them and AC to write an early history and put it in the supporter area before we all become too old and forget.

AC posted a brief history of the site a while back. I'll see if I can find it, or you can go back and read all of his posts. (They only go back to 04 but he created the site in 1999 or 1998, something to do with a software meltdown)

so nolo, what was the prize for the 10,000 member milestone winner?

I believe the prize was a discount on ESA Snowbird '06. DP won.

AC told me at the first Epic ski gathering at Tahoe the story behind Epicski.

Basically AC startead Epicski during the hight of the dot com boom for the purpose of getting rich selling advertising and goods. Server space was expensive back then but it was worth a shot. He even had lots of bumper stickers and such made up for the boom that he was expecting.

AC had an ingenious way of starting the discussions. He basically created a bunch of ficticious characters who were having conversations with each other. I found Epicski after being turned off by the Scott Aberhamson debacle on RSA. I was looking for a site to air my ideas about technique and ski instruction in preparation for taking my level III exam. I did not want to do this on the PSIA web site because if I were wrong, the whole central staff would know it.

Because of being turned off by RSA, I was very careful to set the tone of the discussion as a high standard in a very civil manner. The tone that I set is still evident today.

I started airing my ideas and AC's ficticious characters chimed in. Soon others found Epicski as a place to air technical skiing discussions. We were the barking beavers forum.

Eventually AC decided to switch servers and software and we all had to suddenly register and the name changed to the barking bears. There may have been about a hundred of us at that point. The forum remained a technical/general discussion forum for quite some time until it the size grew to large.

At around 500 members Compuserve shut down their site and a whole bunch of people including Ott, Arcmeister and Bob Barnes found the Epicski site as a place that was to their likeing. Epicski suddenly took on new life.

I was fearful of the talent that joined the forum at that point because everything that I thought was out there in writing for all of them to pick apart. Instead of pick me apart they confirmed much of what I had written and I became good friends with them.

Regardless of what AC thinks I could not have envisioned what Epicski has become.

That's funny, Pierre. At that time there probably were two Central examiners among a staff of maybe 75 that even read (as opposed to participated on) the PSIA website.

Not in my mind. All of them read it to see who was stupid and that is why Epicski took off and PSIA did not.

Thanks for the quick history lesson Pierre.

And Lars too. Riding the lifts and skiing with AC and Pierre talking history was such fun. Even at the time we were discussing the beginning, none of us really thought it would be like this today.

I think that bodes well to Ac's tenacity and the continueing efforts of the owners we now have. Their willingness to adapt and survive. I know many people don't realize it or care but this team we have behind the scenes, Admin and the Mod Group, work very hard and long trying to improve and maintain the quality of the forums. I also know that many of the posters don't know who AC is or how he got started, but you should all know he is very pleased the way Epic Ski is today.

It might be fun to post the whole story of Epic Ski again. I think we did just that a while back didn't we? Maybe one of our Wizards can conjure it up. Cirque?

How do you find your member number? I looked in my profile and couldn't find it. Personally, I think that online search engines have fueled the growth of Epic. That is how I found it 4 years ago. If you do any search on ski related topics at least one Epic thread will show up. LewBob

Easy way? Click on the user in any post. Hover over one of the items in the menu. Look at the link. The user number will be in it.
