Okay, speaking of money... skiing?

Thread Starter
Lots of posts in the Rollin' In It thread that say money can't buy happiness, and I agree... sort of. But what if it came down to compromising on your skiing? Yikes!
lack of money never compromises my skiing. I just make sure I compromise every thing else first and then it never gets to the skiing. My car sucks, my stereo sucks, my TV really sucks, but my skis rock and i get out often enough considering my schedule
post #3 of 24
Yep exactly - skiing has highest priority

What stereo?
Yup skiing sure does have priority...I am always up to my eyeballs in debt, I have a 21 year old heap of junk for a car, last season no tv this season a 9" portable. But I will ski 200+ days this year on two continents!

Man your knees must hurt Tom, that's a lot of skiing.
But are you skiing for yourself those days or teaching others?

Money can't buy happiness?

Please send your donations to JohnH, and I'll test the theory by spending a few weeks with CMH. But I think I know what the results will be.

On a more serious note, my ultimate happiness is my one year old daughter. It took five years, a very good health insurance policy, and a boat load of cash for me and my wife to be able to have a child. It will take just as much to have another - if we are lucky. Had I been working a lower paying job, with a lower quality health insurance program (say, as a ski instructor), I might be able to ski a lot, but I would not have a child. So yes, it's true, money can buy happiness (in some cases).

She said I'm sorry baby, I'm leaving you tonight
I found someone new, he's waiting in the car outside
Ah honey, how could you do it
We swore each other everlasting love
She said Well yeah I know but when we did there's one thing we weren't thinking of
And that's money
Money changes everything

Screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision dancing across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely, hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone

Don't run back inside, honey, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young any more
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey, you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

Oh come take my hand
We're ridin out tonight to case the Promised Land
Oh Thunder Road, Oh Thunder road, Oh Thunder Road
Lyin' out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road

So I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
Well I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
Tonight we'll be free-all the promises will be broken

There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch,
They're gone on the wind so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers and we're pulling out of here to win

Dark Side of the Moon

Money (Waters) 6:32

Money, get away.
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay.
Money, it's a gas.
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team.

Money, get back.
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off of my stack.
Money, it's a hit.
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit.
I'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet.

Money, it's a crime.
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie.
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today.
But if you ask for a raise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away.

"HuHuh! I was in the right!"
"Yes, absolutely in the right!"
"I certainly was in the right!"
"You was definitely in the right. That geezer was cruising for a
"Why does anyone do anything?"
"I don't know, I was really drunk at the time!"
"I was just telling him, he couldn't get into number 2. He was asking
why he wasn't coming up on freely, after I was yelling and
screaming and telling him why he wasn't coming up on freely.
It came as a heavy blow, but we sorted the matter out"

P.S. Fox hat--Man, sorry for thinking like you, but I posted Thunder Road lyrics last night on Sugar's "Have you ever" thread. Awwwwwsome tune.

May one quietly defer this thread to the O'Jays ????

When I received my $300 tax break last fall, it nicely contributed to half of the cost of my new Atomics. Is life not grand?

Whoa, whoa, slow down there. The signature says one thing and the post says the other?

I think of Tony Forrest, a Nordic ski instructor, who coached the Nordic Team for many years and still is spiritual advisor to the entire tribe, talking about the difference between having money and being rich:

I don't have any money and my car is shit, but I have a closet full of GoreTex and a garage full of great equipment.

Baby, you're a rich man.

It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money but it won't get you too far
Get you too far..

When one skis on Atomics, he not only has acquired but also has become.

Darryl Hall. That white boy can really sing.
Well, Lisahardt, that remains to be seen! Wait until the snow flys and then we'll see what you've become. yourself.

My skiing was ALWAYS compromised. It's called being an ADULT, and it's NO FUN at times. If I were a self-indulgent Mom, I would have skied every day and fed the child oatmeal.

She had a well balanced diet, good clothes, and all the things kids need. The sacrifice was worth it. Now that she's on her own, however,

screw the bills, to hell with fixin the car, I'm goin skiing this winter!

yup, thats how it is. Like I said earlier, Its time for me to get a NICER car than the one I have and I can squeak out $2500 total if I tighten my belt (damn this college level education stuff) but I have got some a set of Beta CarV 9.18's with two days of corduroy on them from the end of last season sitting in my room next to a pair of atomic adjustable poles, and I think to myself, "who needs anything else?" (excepting of course a lift ticket)
