Elk is about an hour and a bit north of Tanglewood. It is worth the trip.
I echo Phil's sentiment 100%. We skied Elk this past Saturday and it was actually OK. We stopped at Tanglewood on the way and they had one ribbon of white amongst the mud that wound all the way down to the bottom. For $35 we decided to keep going West and North to Elk.
Both mountains will get an opportunity to blow snow but seriously you will probably get bored of Tanglewood in an hour. What type of skier are you? Tanglewood is really a beginner hill. Elk has some challenging trails but not sure if they will be able to get them open in time for your trip.
Tanglewood is pretty small and I doubt they have more than a few trails open, actually they only have a few trails total . That being said, I learned to ski there and it is a great little mountain with a nice lodge at the top. If you are just learning it would be a great mountain, but head to a larger mountain if you want a little more terrain.
