Whistler late March/early April

I am planning a ski trip for my family--our five-year old son will be skiing for the first time. Unfortunately we can't go until late March. Has anyone skiied Whistler in late March/early April? If so, how was the snow? Does anyone have any recommendations for late Spring skiing?

Hi Kim,

The conditions are usually spectacular in March/April. We usually get a few storms in late feb - early march, and then the sun comes out! we already have record snowfall and by the time you come out there should be an excellent base.

There are also plenty of activities for kids such as tubing, dog sledding, and other entertainment for your son if he isn't too keen on skiing.

If you wish to know more, send me a message. I run a vacation planning service here in Whistler and can help you out, as well as get you some good deals on accommodation and everything else.

take care

Ditto what Steve said, I often advise my friends to come after Easter, snow is still good, sun is out and crowds are down.

I've been living and skiing here for the last 15 years...Late March to mid April is the best time of a ski season. Winter snow-pac long light and the possibility of winter snow. Cheaper deals for ski-weekers...Even in May last year we were saying how good it was not just for May - but for anytime in a ski season. Perhaps this year we'll have a 5 to 6 meter base on closing day in June...Blackcomb stays open this year after Whistler closes ( i think ) which is even better because Bc is higher than W. and has better narly north facing terrain.

The scoop

Be sure to rent your kids stuff the day/night before so you don't have to deal with it in the morning. We rented from the shop at the base of Blackcomb- very bottom, not where the day lodge is. This is a big snow year, so you should be able to ski to the base in April. Some years it gets sketchy at best.
Also, the kids ski school at Whistler is part way up the gondola, so you have to plan around taking the extra time to get up there and back.
Bring a pack that you can strap small skis to, it makes you hands - free,so you can deal with your own stuff and a little kid also and not have to carry two pair of skis in your hands, plus you can pack treats, drinks, sunscreen, camera all the stuff.
Make sure to make ski-school reservations ahead of time, and ask them what to bring, usually that young they won't use poles. Its also a great time to start them with a helmet, kind of like always wearing a seat belt.

Unbound's comments are very accurate. You can ski the entire 5200 vertical into April, and even some years until early May.
You'll love it here!

We just made plans for 4/14-4/21 and I can't wait! It will be our second time out there, but last time was mid-winter so I appreciate the encouraging words for April.

I always go to The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Champs. A great way to end the lift ski season. Snow on the upper mountain is always great. Weather is usually good.

Most of the time have fresh snow on the upper mountain. Hotel and lift prices are discounted too!

Staying @ First Tracks Lodge in Creekside. One bedroom suite. Sleeps 4. $116/night with 4 people would be $29/night, per person. Let me know if you want to share, anyone. Staying April 18th - April 23rd.
