Modestly good news from Crystal Mt, Mich

I know the ski resorts are going to be more optimistic than reality, but I have to think my glass is half full.

This is in the news letter from Crystal Mountain today.

Winter has returned to Crystal!
Mother Nature has blanketed us with 4-6" of natural snow since Monday. The snowmaking crew has been hard at work rebuilding the base after the recent spring conditions. Our snow guns were running for over 60 hours straight! We opened three additional slopes this morning including Thor and will open five North Face runs on Friday giving us 50% of our skiable terrain.

Yeah, but the website says their operating hours have been reduced to noon-9p.m. instead of the usual 9-9.

I'm not convinced they'll pull off what they're promising, and I'm disappointed that they've cut hours without really giving any notice. Imagine my surprise when I was skiing Tuesday night and the lifts closed at 8 instead of 9.

Unless they're giving reductions in lift ticket prices and specials for regulars, I doubt it'll do them much good, especially for next year's season pass sales or employee morale.

We think an awful lot alike.
I'm trying to be understanding and look on the sunny side, but mother nature has delt them a raw deal and they're not necessarily handling it well.

For a company that prides itself on customer services I've noticed a number of things that just don't click. For example, aside from the current situation, why do they refuse to open the skier center on "normal" 9 a.m. lift startup mornings until well after 8:30 a.m.? How are you supposed to get your gear on in the warmth of their building, get your lift ticket and--especially for those who have traveled a distance--use the restrooms in twenty minutes or so?

I'm with you on that one!
Another thing that bugs me is the displacement of the Patrollers from THEIR building:
The one thing about that is the patrol always knew they were subject to losing what they built. Some time ago the resort showed them plans that included a bunch of revisions to the entire bottom of the hill in that spot. The patrol building is right in the way of new structures in those plans.

That location's current use makes sense with the way the resort has developed the children's learning area right next to it.

Kneale, I understand the sense of it, but that doesn't take away from the dissapointment of how it was handled.

If I were really up in arms about it, I'd stop skiing there, but my logic tells me there is a bigger plan. Hope it includes a nice new patrol building

Kmcleary and I are skiing 1st chair this morning. Meeting us?

Update.
Finally met up with Kmcleary at Crystal mountain today, picked a meeting time and place so we could make some turns together, but was beckoned by the ski patrol.

Seems that my husband and his buddy misjudged an exchange of turns and turned into each other. Said buddy has 50 lbs over my husband and sent him flying into the trees on Thor. UGH!

Bad news, slight concussion and cracked ribs.
As well as missing my chance to ski Kmcleary.

Good news, husband was wearing a substantial helmet and is not significantly injured.

Kneale, if you think you can meet the mclearys to ski on Monday, they are staying through to ski Monday.

I'm working the holiday. We've been busy all week and weekend. I may get to Crystal Friday.

Hope your hubby heals up quickly.

The patrol knew about the possible loss of what they'd built when they did it. Reportedly, the plans for the new skier center included some arrangement the patrol was going to be happy with. I'm pretty sure the swap with the kids center wasn't what they expected and is a temporary situation. However, I'm also wondering that if the resort feels so pinched by one poor holiday that cutting back so drastically is necessary, maybe the new structure is farther away than originally planned.

Update on Crystal's operating hours: The website says they're returning to 9-9 operation this weekend.
Monday morning we had 3 -4 inches of fresh. loaded on the loki chair at 8:50 good times the most fresh snow I have seen in 3 years. Maybe my luck is changing.

We stayed there Friday thru Monday. Over all we had a really good time, except the hot tub at the main pool was closed. For a holiday weekend that just plain old sucked.

100% open at Crystal now!
not a dark spot on any hill and open to normal hours!

I skied 3" fresh powder this morning, which is awesome considering the winter we've had so far.
Ullr, keep it coming.
