While stretching and strengthening ski-specific muscles are an important part of ski fitness, practicing ski-specific movement patterns is even more important. There is a motor learning theory known as "pattern recognition." At the risk of over-simplification, this theory states that the brain does a far better job at recognizing movement patterns, as opposed to specific muscles groups.

This video shows an excellent movement pattern for getting the skis on edge. While many instructors teach this by "pressuring the little toe," others prefer to focus on lifting the big toe. This video explains why the later approach may be preferable.
