I might have this all screwy BUT weren't the games close to going to Denver once, recently? THESE games? If so, a synopsis of why not. The Voice of the People?

The 1976 winter games were to be held in Denver. The citizens of Colorado voted it down based on the cost of the games. It was then given to Innsbruck, Austria. Someone else probably have lot more details.

True in '76...don't know about lately. Innsbruck ended up hosting again at the last minute.

I use to have a ski hat with the Olympics rings on it and Denver '76. As Norefjell says, the games had been awarded and turned down by the voters. That was before organizers figured out how to make them pay big bucks. As a Colordao native and skier I was disappointed. As a Colorado tax payer...

I found this quote on the web:

quote:
The IOC originally gave the 1976 Winter Games to Denver, but in 1972 Colorado voters rejected a $5 million bond issue to finance the undertaking. Denver immediately withdrew as host and the IOC called on Innsbruck, site of the 1964 Games.
