I have seen the top of the mountain, and it is good

I've been to many bootfitters over the years and have never been able to fully solve my pain problems with boots. I've been to many reputed shops with "top bootfitters" and have usually left unimpressed. Occasionally I have found one that I thought was good, but still had lingering issues and just resigned myself to the fact that maybe my foot wasn't meant to be comfortable. Well my friends, I've just returned from Race Stock Sports in Waterbury VT and they redefine bootfitting.

Stopped in and saw PJ Dewey with a friend who's a racer and had previously used him. I was a little unsure how seriously I'd be taken when I saw all the other racers in there being fitted and the walls of top of the line race gear. I'm not a racer. I'm a good skier, but no racer. I'm not skiing world cup boots, I'm skiing Tecnica Diablo Magmas. I was immediately put at ease when I was greeted. PJ took the time to listen to my problems and didn't launch into a "look at all my bootfitting knowledge" spiel to try to impress me. Instead he methodically went about fixing each problem starting with new footbeds, then proceeding to padding and grinding different areas of the boot. This guy is a maniac with bootwork, the fastest I've seen. The other nice thing? He didn't immediately trash previous bootfitters attempts on these boots, even though he probably could have. This guy fits world cup athletes including Daron Rahlves, but I never heard a peep about it. Instead he just asked me about my skiing and what I wanted the boots to do.

The equipment and resources inside the shop are impressive. Definitely the most well put together custom shop I've seen. I'm sure there's others out there, but this is the best bootfitting experience I've had and felt I should pass it along. Plus, if you're a racer or speed freak, this place is like a candy store.

The "Boot Doctors", in Telluride CO. They saved my vacation and aching heel and shin.
