Demo Skis in the NY mountain area !

After searching long and hard and comming up empty, I was checking snow conditions at a place I haven't skied in ages (but want to ski Friday), and stumbled upon a mountain store that Demos skis in the mountains of N.Y. - Its at Ski Windham.

Here's what the page says:

demo equipment

Try before you buy!
What could be better than trying out the latest skis? Returning them to try out the latest snowboards! Welcome to Windham Mountain Sports Demo Center, where you can choose from over 200 of the hottest skis and boards.

Test drive serious skis from Volkl, Fischer, K2, Rossignol, Atomic, Salomon and Volant, or try the newest snowboards from Burton, Rome, Rossignol and Ride.

At Windham Mountain, the sweetest equipment is yours at an even sweeter demo price - only $35 a day for skis or snowboards, or $20 for a half-day (midweek only).
New this year: Tecnica boots! Cost to demo is just $35 a day or $20 for a half day. Package price with skis is $60 for the day or $35 for a half day. Half days are available midweek, non-holiday.
  • Up to two days of demo center fees can be credited toward your purchase of new skis or a board from the Mountain Sports Shop.
  • Buy demo skis and boards at discounted prices.
  • The demo center is open every day of the season, seven days a week. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., midweek (non- holidays), and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends and holidays.
For questions & reservations, email: democenter@windhammountain.com

Here's the link to the mountain: http://www.windhammountain.com/equipment/demo/

I don't know what models they have available, it's almost 12 am, so it's too late to call. I could have used this info last week, so I hope that it helps some of you east coast guys in the PA,NJ and NY areas.

Good luck,

ww,

You were searching long and hard looking for a place to demo skis? Just about every ski shop I know of demos skis. Both at the resorts and elsewhere. If you're interested in a particular brand, you can often go to the ski manufacturer's website and find out which ski shops sell them. Most likely, they'll have skis for you to try out and will deduct the rental cost from a future ski purchase.

True. Most 'decent' ski shops have demos. They may charge you a fee like a performance ski rental. They may credit it towards purchase, depending on how serious you are about buying. The downside is that you will likely be limited to one ski, or one ski at a time.

Bristol Mountain near Rochester, NY also has an on-the-hill demo center. You pay a fee (by the hour, half day, full day) and you can demo as many skis as you like. They typically have a very good selection.

Manufacturers and shops also have demos at the slopes during the season.

Some ski areas and rental shops have a limited selection of high end skis you can rent by the day.

The rule of thumb around here is; DEMO, DEMO, DEMO!

Hello MJ.

Most stores that _you_ know demo skis....Most shops that I contacted did not. Yes, if you are at a major resort, no problem. But in my general ski area (read the top of the thread, PA,NJ,NY area) I found that most mountain shops only rent a single choice of "high performance" ski, which was always a Salomom X wing. That was not what I was looking for. I wanted a choice of top contenders. Ski Windham (4 hours away) was the first place that I came across that looked like it would do the trick. (Still haven't had time to confirm the inventory.)The reason I posted the info was because I had talked to several members of this forum that were from the same area as I, (Jersey Shore) and no one was really finding shops within a reasonable drive (2 to 3 hours) that had a good demo program with a good choice of skis.Your idea to contact the manufacturer is a good thought, though.

Since you seem to know of so many shops at nearby mountains that have great demo programs, please help a brother out and list them !

Hunter had a stash of Stockli demos last year. There have been some changes so I'm not sure about this year.

When I needed to demo skis many years ago, Hunter mountain ski shop set up 3 pairs for me to try. I tried one, then went back in and tried the second, then went back in and tried the third. it helped that they knew me as a customer though. I know the Pro, at Hunter, has Fischer, Elan and Blizzard demo's available on a limited basis. I'm sure many others have them also. Find the shop near a mountain that carries the brand you are interested in, call them and if they have the ski available, reserve the ski/skis for a midweek day and try them. The usual plan has been mentioned, pay for the demo and they deduct the fee on purchase. Do it soon, since most shops will be dumping thier demo's in a month or so. Also, due to the prevalence of on-line discounts, from what I'm hearing lately, ski shops no longer consider selling skis thier primary income, and don't carry as much as they used to, hence there are not a lot of demo's. Why should they take a brand new ski, make it a demo to sell at cost or less, rent it to someone at $40, so they can go on-line and buy it for what they paid for it? If a shop thinks one ski model will be a big seller, they will buy a couple, make 1 a demo, and when people try it, they will sell 5 or 6.

In the Catskills, I have demo-ed from the Pro Ski Shop in Hunter and from the ski shop on the access road to Belleayre (Belleayre Ski Shop, I think). Hunter Mtn. also does multiple demos (http://huntermtn.com/shop.html). Belleayre's website indicates that they also rent high-performance skis (http://huntermtn.com/shop.html).

A big thank you to you all for the info.

When I contacted Hunter last week, they were only offering one type of high performance ski, I think it was an X-wing. I don't blame the shops for not putting out the high perf. skis with this warm weather ! I'm afraid to ski my new AC4's for the same reason. I hope it gets cold enough to make some cover by Friday, I'll be skiing Windham or Hunter depending on who has the best snow.

Any recommendations ??

Thanks Again,
WW.

Now I'm LOL ! It says "Epicski Patroller", I didn't put 2 and 2 together...

I'm not comming up to Hunter tomorrow, it's a 4 hour drive for me and it's supposed to rain. : I'm shooting for a few days in Vermont next week....we'll see. This weather is depressing !

BTW, I skied Flexon Comps until two years ago when they literally exploded apart on my firt mogul run of the day at Keystone. I went into the skishop at the bottom of the mountain and showed the boots to the ski techs, who were also Flexon fans. They all stood around the trash can saluting and whistling "taps" as I sadly disposed of my old friends. Of all the people on this forum, I thought that you'd get a kick out of that.
