But 174 should not be a given. He may want to go shorter.

Pretty solid response. Recon.

I've skied with Ski3po and while I agree with the Recon, I would say 181 as he's nearly my size and I when I bought the axis XT I tried the 174 and didn't like it. Ended up on the 181 and it was fine.

Of course ski's seem to be a pretty personal thing so what do I know.

The Recon will give him the best mix of on- and off-piste. Plus, it skis very nice for folks coming off older skis and mixing in more feathering.

The Recon is really the "no brainer" in the line for him. When we first started talking about this at Stowe. 'Recon" was the first word out of everyones mouth, then..just give them to Phil, that was a distance second..I don't recall who said that though

Thanks everyone - I'm hoping to demo the Recon somewhere in the next couple of weeks and I'll try out the lengths discussed above. My indecisiveness appreciates the strong response in one direction.

Yea! I can't sleep at night, just waiting and wondering what you chose!

Yes, chose the 174 Recons...although I'm still waiting patiently for them.

Please be patient and know your order is in a queue at the factory and will be filled ASAP. Oftentimes people get next year's models because of the time of year the order is made.

Understood, not a problem at all. Until recently, conditions have made it so that having a very old (as Phil is quick to point out) pair of skis hasn't been the worst thing in the world. And that next year's model thing would be terrible, huh?

Woohoo! Got the Recons last week in time for a trip up to northern vermont over the weekend. Perfect timing with the arrival of mucho new snow up there. Thanks to all for the recommendation!

My son is on some recons this week at Steamboat. It is a real nice ski, I took some runs on them, best of luck.
