Great performance , tecnica design is outstanding
The Cyclic is now in its 4th season with the only change being the top sheet graphics each year. No reason to change this ski, it is nearly flawless. Wider tip with rocker, camber, and tail rocker...

Gear mentioned in this thread:
If you're heading over tomorrow morning, watch the roads. Could be freezing sleet/rain, depending on which direction you're coming from.
I'll reiterate that I'm there all Wed/Fri nights, and Saturday days (although I'm usually busy all day teaching on Saturdays.) I'm also out most Thursday nights for clinics. If anyone wants to meet up, send a PM and I'll give you my cellphone number.
Unfortunately I am now all of a sudden traveling way more than I want to. Corvallis Oregon next week and then Houston the week after. Non of this is my idea of a good time.
Too busy this week to even consider blowing off a day. But Friday is tempting. I've got my eye on Friday. I'm also considering tryng the Beast on Saturday. Will it be mobbed, or is there even such thing at the Beast?
I actually think it's gonna come down mostly/all as snow right around there, at least on the mountain. Not great, either, but better than black ice. But most of the metrowest area could be *real* slick tomorrow morning.
"Heavy snow. Some sleet or freezing rain possible. High 24F. Winds NE at 10 to 20 mph. 10 to 15 inches of snow expected."
(emphasis added -- !!)
Any TR posted from tonight (2/2/2011) session at wa will be greatly appreciated if posted before 0500 tomorrow.
Did snow ops groom the whole hill or will some goodies be left for the AM?
being wachusett it is all groomed out, from the bumps on tenth to the pockets of boot high pow on smith. :/
on the bright side though, the ice is covered up nicely, its just packed powder. if you don't mind ducking ropes though, there are the glades between balance rock and ropers, some real sick lines there, and some tree rails if you like that stuff. take balance rock and when the orange ropes go up, the first part is knocked down, just step over. new lines have about knee high pow, go fast enough and some face-shots are possible haha.
btw hrstrat, do you work at wachusett? can i work there over feb, break as an instructor?
Nope, I don't teach at wa, I retired from PSIA at another hill about 10 yrs ago....might get back in the game after retirement from full time gig. Thought about teaching at wa a few years ago, knew several folks in ski school at that time but with the commute from RI factor it just was too much of a commitment so I passed on it.
There are a couple of wa instructors who post frequently in this thread who might be able to help you. Wachusett has a large ski school staff tho and I believe they require either completion of their ITC or previous PSIA status at another hill to hire part time instructors....but that might be old info.
Thanks for the slope status update.....my 170 i supershapes love to snack on packed powder.....but unfortunately once again I guess the Explosivs will stay in their usual spot in the closet at home
From a Wachusett patroller, please do not duck ropes/ribbons and do not recommend that practice to others. The ropes/ribbons are there for a reason and skiing is only permitted on marked and open trails, not between them. Have fun, enjoy, but please follow the rules and stay safe. -Thanks
Just got back an hour ago from the 1/2 day at wa.
Hero snow all morning and place was pretty much deserted. A few runs down Connie we had edge to edge untouched cord of natural hardpack. May have been the best groomed conditions I have ever ski'd.
The entire hill was groomed top to bottom, no freshies to be had.....but it was about as good as I imagine wa can get.
SMJ and I met a new ski bud on the lift and he ski'd the morning with us. Nice tele guy named Hal.....I hope he visits and posts in the thread like we asked him too, definitely would make a fine barking bear! Real smooth tele skier he was.
The flats at wa can be a bit much in deep snow but I was still hoping for some fluffy natural powder bumps.
Alas my Volkl Explosivs never got out of the car....it was a perfect snacking day for my 170 i supershapes.....they are dripping off very happily on the front steps here at home.
You were correct on this.
Pricey - the treat and hot cider came to $5.38.
Super yum tho and a real cool vibe to the place too!
sincere aplogies tele. truely. i will refrain from going into the wooded areas and will notify others as well. in all honesty i did not no it was off-limits, but rather unpatrolled. had i known it was against Wa rules i would not do it. that is lest i risk getting my pass pulled, god forbid, my Wa pass is my only oppertunity to go skiing. i hope to meet up with you eventually, as well as Hrstrat and SMJ.
great TR Hrstrat, sounds like some good skiing, i as well hoped they would leave tenth untouched, but their main clientlel would much rather ski groomed, albeit icy, hardpack.
i am currently writting a formal proposal to open up wachusett a little more. i will definatly put it up here before submission if you guys would care. the general outline of it follows that he old growth restrictions in place now are out-dated because at the time it was thought that it was the only one in massachusetts, now we are known to posses 30+. Statistics show that woods exposed to winter sports such as snowshoeing, skiing and X-Country benefit forests(glades). Wachusett is currently facing an onslaught of "boring terrain" comments as shown here on epicski as well as in their comments box at the mountain itself (an access to info request). some options that are presented in the proposal are to open the side to one are two trails which would be more difficult or possibly left ungroomed, not seeded or to open some glades.
There was no ice though KartoonBOB, but thanks for stepping up to the plate re skiing out of bounds, and lobbying for more terrain.
There were some nice bumps on 1/2 of Hitchcock as well as the bumps on Upper 10th, which this year is a wider section then last year which is good.
Even by noon there were some small bumps and loose snow developing on upper Smith Walton. The rest of the mountain had Land 'o Lakes written all over it. Butter!
As I said to SMJ and our new tele friend, it was kinda like I imagine Deer Valley must be.
Yes, butter is the word, tho in the commonwealth that would be "buttah"
not that I know about such Utah, CO etc. things skiing
Thanks for the replay KB. You are correct regarding "old-growth". By keeping within the old-growth restrictions, we maintain use of the land. A couple of notes from Tuesday night. The groomers left the top of Smith un-groomed and also left the edges of the trails off of Polar Express natural, so they were thinking of us when doing their thing. If you are on the hill on Tuesday nights and see a patroller with free heels, say hello. There are two of us, so you have a 50-50 shot.
The skiing has been great and I will be back Saturday (day-time) in civilian kit.
If you can convince the DCR to let the mountain open up more terrain, more power to you. I can tell you the ownership would love to have more terrain available, including some of the glades. They'd probably have to do some thinning and removal of brush and fallen trees/debris, though, so it's a hard sell.
i know its a hard sell, but it takes one to start something right?
and about clearing the underbrush...clearing dead, and low-level obstructions such as rotted stumps, fallen trees would allow the forest to thrive better because the nutrients from them would have already been absorbed or would have never been absorbed. it essentially does what a brush fire does, allows secondary succession to take place. it is shown that doing just that is hugely beneficial to forests, especially ones with a very old ecology in place as shown in the red wood forests of California and the scientific and methodical burning of underbrush with intent to rejuvenate the forest.
over on to conditions, wachusett is as great as ive ever seen it, if you are on the fence on going out do it. sunday is going to be great, with about six new inches of snow! should be hero snow too so after they groom it your super-shapes can rip some turns
Are we really going to go 2 straight years without a ski trip/day together on the hill?
A Saturday night at Yawgoo at least will be better than that gloomy prospect.
Well for sure the Pine Hill trail ain't know growth forest. There ain't a tree on it thicker than two or three inches. Next time you take the connector down to Ropers (yeah I know it's boring), stop at the corner and look 20' to your right. You'll see it. It's obvious.
He really really likes us SMJ! And we didn't ski together all year last year!
Yes I do, and we didn't go for a bike ride together either, nor have I hooked up with RISKIER for a quick 9 holes at Rose Hill and we live 2 miles apart.
Pathetic. I rode the fancy bike like twice last summer.......
Why does life get in the way of fun stuff?
Wish I could go tomorrow but I am targeting a run to either B-east, Catamount or wa on Thursday so tomorrow is take care of business day........
Let's focus on a day at B-east soon, how's that sound?
Going shopping for new boots today so if that mission succeeds I will be chomping to get out!!!
All this great snow and I have been straight out on business travel thae last 4 out of 5 weeks.. and need to be in Houston on Monday.
Hopefully I'll be taking some days off when I return.
i hope you all are enjoying the weather.
