Wachusett Conditions and get togethers - Page 41

Wachusett gets boring, but it's a lot easier to maintain a small mountain than a big one.  I skied there this morning and it was spectacular.  Skied Mount Snow a week ago and it sucked, very icy.

Berkshire East is also worth considering, much more terrain than the wa, much more challenge, not crowded and also does a great job of snowmaking and grooming.

Polar Express Quad to the summit has been down all day.  Naturally, it's a beautiful weekend day and the crowds on the mid-mountain lift are horrendous.  They do list the problem on their website front page and are offering half day rates for a full day pass, so best to check before you go.

There was a town-wide power outage late Friday through Saturday AM.  Someone crashed into power poles.  They were able to open yesterday but a little late.  Not their fault.  They blame the lift problems that began last night on the power outage.  Maybe...  but they should have spare controllers, transformers, or whatever else was failing.  Earlier this season I was stuck for almost a half hour on their other lift.  Some maintenance improvement or better components for the  lifts seems to be in order.

Was there as well today and got on the mountain at 8:15am but bailed about 10:30. Lift lines to mid mountain were horrendous for a 5 min ride back down to the lift. Too bad as it was a gorgeous day.

What the hell are you doing going to Wachusett on a weekend!???!!!!

Come out to Berkshire East.  No lift lines, no crowds, great skiing.

Wachusett is for weekday mornings imo.

While night league is going I will head to the Wa to run the 'formerly know as' NASTAR gates.  I live on the other side of the mountain, so not a big inconvenience.

Hoping for better snow up north.  I still have 3 of 3 skivermont.com passes to use.  I'll take a vaca day for those.  I do want to check out B'East some day.

From where you live it is little effort to drive to the B'East. I went last Saturday didn't arrive until 8:45 and parked in the third row.Seriously.

Berkshire East is a real mountain - the trail layout is a little goofy and there are very few trail signs to be seen but once you figure it out it ski's awesome. There is a steepish blue called Hemlock for example that I have rarely seen anyone else on and it ski's amazing. Had it all to ourselves on a Saturday morning.

Yep, not one bit like Wachusett Mountain. Cheaper too!

You really should take @SkiMangoJazz advice!

Ventura, I too live :15 minutes from Wachusett, so yes I ski there, and fortunately for me my job allows me to ski weekday mornings.  I got 13 runs in by 11am this morning, awesome carveable snow.

Of course I understand if you're doing the gates in the evenings that you have no choice, but as far as weekends are concerned, make the hour and a quarter trip out to the B-East sometime.  As hrstrat said, it's a real mountain, probably 4 times as much terrain and much more pitch then the Wa.

Conditions report for Wednesday 2/17.

Skied from 8 to 10:30 am.  Not crowded at all for a holiday period.  Well the beginner slopes got incredibly busy, but the summit was not busy at all.  No liftline on the Polar Express.  I'm sure it got busy later on of course, but the early bird gets the worm.

Conditions were not too bad considering the rain yesterday.  Certainly wasn't soft snow, but it was "good for you" conditions.  Some bad ice sections and some streams running across some closed areas, but all in all it held up well.

Final day tomorrow - can't go

Season over no skiing good Friday...

Closed down the Wa yesterday.  Conifer, 10th, lower Smith, lower Hitchcock, Challenger, and Ralphs open.  Summit area was ICY, lower areas OK cover and soft.  Challenger was bare at the very top and a WROD from Ralphs until crossing over.  Had a good time, light crowd.  I live close and have about 8" of fresh snow this morning.  Too bad...

Would have been nice to have some skiing this weekend, but all in all they did a pretty good job considering the challenge thrown down by El Nino.

Bumperoo for 10th season is it?

Looking like opening day less that a week away and I have a season pass!

Who's up for some midweek or nighttime Wa 2016/2017?

When did you hear they're opening?  My guess would be Sunday.

I'll be there as much as is humanely possible until Berkshire East opens, then at the Wa many, many weekday mornings throughout the season.  Going for a new record in number of days skied this year.  My current record is 81.

Looks like an announcement coming out later today on Instagram
post #1216 of 1249

Guns should be blasting tonight.  With 2X the capacity, it will be interesting to see how quickly they can open.  Hoping open doesn't mean one WROD...

Opening will probably be Challenger and Ralph's Run.  That's what they've done the last few years.

Fine with me, bring it on.

I'm always good for a few trips every season for some night skiing.

Looks like a chance they'll open Friday, they say they're trying.  I've had that date on my calendar for months

Often they open weekends only for the first week or so, but if they're open next week Wednesday and Friday would be the days I can go.

I've been watching the webcams.  It is HUGELY impressive what that new pump house can do.  Five trails (seven if you count upper and lower) have snowmaking at once.  I know Friday after T-day is weather-permitting opening day.  It looks like there's a good chance this year.  I may be skiing Saturday.

Well they updated their webpage before their Facebook page.

Opening Friday.  Ralph's, Challenger, Ollies and Indian Summer.

Time for some easy turns!

Wow, crazy that they are opening so early this year. I wish I had brought ski stuff home for Thanksgiving! Last year we were skiing on rocks there at the end of December.

Not to be bummer bob but rain and end of month warmup might knock this train off the tracks....but nobody recovers like Wa.

70% chance of rain Friday hope y'all snag some cruisin' ⛷👍
post #1226 of 1249

well forecast change from rain to rain showers with only 0.08" that not much.

If they opens I think it's well worth it… So far I'm planning to be there

Actually they were open black friday last year, but it was a WROD the entire way, even with some grass/dirt spots.

Fair enough, did not know that. It looked like this on December 30 last year, which in my book counts as a WROD. Hope you all get to make some turns this weekend. Thumbs Up

What's the best bet for a day trip out of Boston tomorrow? I'm thinking Loon.

Skied Okemo on Thursday basically 2 trails open top to bottom (they call it 7). Good coverage then, not sure what has happened since it has warmed up with some drizzle today. Skied Killington today, they made enough snow on the trails to just to open them, some were unskiable by the end of the day. They call a trail open when there is more white than brown showing thru. World Cup races this weekend so not sure how that Is going to affect the amount of people on the slope. Very crowded today. Had not been here in a while but the whole place looks run down. There a number of abandoned buildings on the access road. What has happened to this place?
