I owned the 183's SD's (2006's) and loved 'em. I'm 6'1" and 200 lbs. BUT, I found the 183's difficult to swing around quickly in treed, cruddy terrain.
On open bowls, or wide terrain, the 183's would be ideal. But where I am - Mt. Baker, with short shots and lots of pine - they were too much beef in too little space.
Atomicman is correct, the SD's are a lot of ski.
I exchanged them for 173's. The feel and grip of the SD's are the best I've found in a wide ski. Really amazing! I wasn't about to change brands.
Sadly, I haven't tried the 173's yet because of a broken ankle.
The key is context. Consider your terrain, style and capabilities.
Bushwacker is lighter than me, but a lot younger, and likes speed.
I'm about level 8, but ski less quickly than I used to, and my conditioning is less.
In your case, blac_vi, based upon your description, I'd suggest 173's. It's a safer bet.
Cirquerider, the 183's sound great for you - especially for the Tahoe area.
In a perfect world, I'd have both.
