Dear all,

A while ago I posted a query regarding where to ski around Vegas and/or NYC. A lot of great advice came my way until the thread developed into a full scale war of words on East vs. West.

Anyhow, since then my plans have panned out slightly different. I'll now have only two days to ski whilst in the Vegas area. So I've settled for Brian Head and Elk Meadows. My questions are: is Elk Meadows going to open this year? And where to stay if I visit Brian Head on day one and Elk meadows on day two and then drive back to Vegas.

Thanks for any and all advice!

Umm, I don't think Elk meadow is open anymore (I THINK it's gone private...)

Looks like you'll have to settle for 2 days at Brian or a day at Mt Charleston. The best place to stay if you visit Brian head is somewhere in Cedar City. There are many chain type hotels there and I doubt any of them would be full that time of year. There's a great little breakfast place on main street, and a little pastry shop around the corner, but I don't remember the name of either.

Elk Meadows is closed and there has been talk of it becoming a private country club like ski area.

In addition to Cedar City (which is about 45 minutes from Brian Head), you may also want to consider staying slopeside. There are quite a few options (although I am not personally familiar with them).

Since you are driving from Vegas, you may want to consider a short detour and drive up the Kolob Canyon road (it is a section of Zion National Park) located about 15 miles south of Cedar City. It is a short drive to spectacular scenery.

I heard that the resorts close to SLC, due to the city's smog and pollution, especially in the winter, that the snow is actually brown, not white. All the pics you see from there are photoshoped to appear white. Is that true?

Cedar City is a nice little college town. If there is a play going on check it out. The college has an excellent theater program.
If you stay in Parowan (the mouth of the canyon) there is an excellent pizza place on the way in, it is right next to a motel, I can't remember the name of either. But the pizza place is fantastic.

There are plenty of options up at Brianhead with some pretty good restaurants. Talk to Ski Patrol, they may be able to guide you up to the peak, or into some of the western terrain.

Kind of a dumpy little resort but there are some pretty steep shots to be found.

Thanks again for all the advice. Shame about Elk Meadow. Brian Head it is then. Will get two days of turns in. Will be staying in some B&B in Cedar City.

Great stuff. Looking forward to it already, hope it snows. I am going to Austria (Soelden) in about a weeks time...no snow except for the glacier...crap, hope the weather turns..quickly!!

Isn't there a place a lot closer to Las Vegas?
