i'm confused as to what you're lookin' for...the b5 & 9:7 are excellent turning tools for the conditions you'll be on this season...are you lookin' for race or more along the casual line...
Bruce: You're right, I've got more toys than any married man should.
However, just to parse things a bit finer, and keep up with PhilPug:
a) Metron B:5's, in 172 cm, are more of an "all-round" ski, than a nimble, quick slicer/dicer (the shovel's about 130 mm wide). They're a perfect "mank" ski for Mt. Baker, and fun in most conditions out west.
b) The new IZOR 9:7's are great turning tools. But, at 177 cm length, are better suited for speed (most people ski 'em in 168 cm lengths). For ripping at tear-inducing speeds on western hard-pack, they're beautiful!
But, for the short, icy hills of the mid-west (less than 500 ft. vertical), I'd like to have something a bit shorter - 170 cm max - for snapping quick, darting turns.
Based upon all I've been told, I'm confident that Fisher RX 8's would kill for the purpose.
But, because they're not as widely distributed, and highly sought-after, they're less available. Hence, fewer bargain-basement prices.
Due to garage-wall of skis as I have, and a desire to remain married
, I'm finding I'd better assume "bottom-feeder" mode for these ones. When a woman looks at you with her hands on her hips, head tilted, and brow furrowed, you know it's time to grovel.
Although Atomic's SX-10 wasn't a top choice on this thread, last year's model can be had relatively cheap (about 1/2 what I'd have to pay for the RX-8's).
These won't be skis I'll use much in the west, so I'm willing to compromise. From what I've read, the SX-10 in 170 would serve my needs fairly well. Plus, I'm kinda happy and familiar with the Atomic feel.
I'm still a tad skittish about racing skis. I've never tried them, and don't want something too stiff. Still, they could be a hoot!
Of course, if the RX 8's drop outta the sky at a deal I can "sell" to the boss, I wouldn't think twice!
