Volkl Mantra sizing for telemark

Thread Starter
I'm considering the Mantra in a telemark setup. I'm 6'3" and about 190lbs. I'm a pretty aggressively off piste tele skier. I'd normally consider the 184 for alpine, but am concerned that in a tele setup it may be too much ski so I'm considering the 177. Any experience with sizing differences for this ski for alpine vs. telemark? Thanks for any advice...

At your size I would go 191 for alpine, and 184 or maybe even 191 for telemark. I really don't think there's any difference in sizing between alpine and telemark.

Clearly the amount of power you can transfer through a tele-boot and binding setup is tremendously different than a full-on alpine setup. I have never seen a tele skier that is concerned with the kinds of high speeds that a longer ski enables either (your results may vary). I think the Mantra is soft enough lenghtwise to make a very nice turning tele ski, but the torsional stiffness combined with a lot of shape is going to mean the equipment is challenged to push it around.

The other consideration is most tele skiers spend more time going uphill than down, and weight penalties are worth considering. I'm totally unqualified to suggest telemark equipment, but I would not recommend the 191, but I would highly recommend the 179 PMGear soft Bro as a lighter ski, slightly wider with less shape, but great turn potential. Toss up on the 177 vs 184. Consider your turn shape and speed. Either ski will support your weight and give you more float than traditional T-skis.
