Why does the media wait until February to report on skiing?

Every February, the newspapers here in New York have pictures of celebrities hitting the slopes in Aspen, etc.

Why February only???

If you're rich and famous, don't you ski in October as well? And why doesn't any newspaper ever photograph you then?

Why is only the month of February considered ski month?

Do celebrities only ski that month?

If they ski other months, why does the news never report?

Things that make you go "Hmmm...."

You must have missed the Sunday Times travel section a couple weeks ago! Always my favoritie issue of the year. The Times does a way better job of covering skiing than the Post.

Does it really matter...?

Celebs skiing. Hmmm. And we're supposed to care about this? There have been several articles in our local papers about skiing so far this year. No skiing celebrities though.

If you're in NY you need to check out the NY Times, seriously. The NY Post is going to focus on the Donald's latest soire at Aspen (and the menu) whereas the Times is going to cover more aspects of the sport - travel articles, gear reviews, real estate, racing, etc. What newspaper are you reading?

for example...just from TODAY's (12/1) new york times there's three articles about skiing, focused on real estate. Yesterday had a great article about ski academys and how kids are using them to get into D1 schools on scholarship plus a review on women's base layers.

Time shares at ski areas

Ski slopes, hiking trails, and maybe a casino

The lodges at snowcreek resort

And if you go to the archived skiing section (which doesn't contain all the articles, some of which may be archived in sports, or travel, or business, etc) you'll notice that they publish tons of artiles about skiing. I read about the new Stowe gondola, the Snowbird tunnel (I still don't get it tho!)

including my two favorites of the past week
FINDING BLISS IN AVALANCHE COUNTRY (BC)
and
POWDER TRIP (Silverton, CO)

I tells ya, the NY Times is a great paper. If you don't agree with their Op-Ed pages, that's Ok. It's still the best paper out there.

The Denver papers have skiing pictures on the front cover all the time, starting when the first resort opens and going until June at least. Today's Rocky Mountain News had a half-page shot of Bode Miller on the front (after he crapped out in the combined). You just need to move.
