We have talked about deep snow immersion before, but I just ran across these web pages on NARSID or Non-Avalanche Related Snow Immersion Death... a new term for me. This can be about falling into tree wells. With the deep snow we got last year and are getting this year, thought has to be given about suffocating in deep snow.

Last year, I pulled out a skier who just fell over into deep snow and had trouble breathing. I just grabbed him by the skis and hauled him out. A couple of days ago, at Crystal Mtn., Wa, I shot off the groom into the powder where even my wide skis sunk about 14 inches. I pushed my ski pole in as far as possible. If I hadn't been on skis, I would have sunk at least up to my neck.
