There was an avalanche victim yesterday in the backcountry near Solitude ski resort. Luckily he survived. Here is the story: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=645752

One of the rescuers involved is a good friend of mine. I consider him a savvy backcountry traveler with every intention of being safe. I think he knows that lapses in judgement were made, but it just goes to show that it can happen to anyone. Thank goodness he was in good practice with the beacon/probe.

Also shows better to have the gear and not need it vs not having it and needing it.

He actually needed it and knew how to use it. I am sure they can now look back and see mistakes they made. The one mistake they didn't make was not knowing how to use their gear. Kudos to your buddy.
