Had my first go at telemarking in Chamonix yesterday….ok I have done 2 days on the thinks a few years ago, but no lessons or stuff. Firs problem gear, the only free rental equipment could scam was Tua Ghost skis in a 170! (the shop said I would not be able to turn a 180!) Riva Chilly Binders and Garmont Veloice? Boots with 2 clips and stiffness of sneakers…It turned out to be a bluebird powder day and everyone was heading up the aig. Midi…I couldn’t chicken out….Walking the ridge in soft boots carrying feather light skis no problem….skiing on these things, now that’s a different story. 2 to 3 ft of fresh, I might be only 5’10 and 160 but these things have no flotation to speak of. Lots of head plants , lots of headplants. And on the steeper sections when I got nervous and my stance got low I kept hooking my back tip behind my front heel!…. On the flat runout on the Mer de glace I found that short skinny skis don’t run to well, but any of the walking/poling sections were easy….down at Montenvers the gondola that serves the ice grotto was closed, most folk opted for the ladder climb to get out…no thanks not this time, with all the new snow I just skied all the was down to Cham.. Will I become a full time pinner? Errr no, I will be out on them from time to time though….bigger, stiffer skis next time.
