The reason the Town of Breck wanted the Gondola was simply to reduce traffic on Ski Hill Rd and decrease the cost of running the free bus system thereby keeping it free.
VR didn't really want to put in the Gondola and didn't have to either because they already had a very old approval for high density base developments at peak 7 and 8.
VR wanted to drastically change those development plans and actually lowered the density. VR agreed with the town to pay 1/2 the cost of the Gondola in exchange for approvals on their Peak 7/8 base development plans.
As one who hates auto traffic in town (especially buses), I personally love the Gondola idea.
|I'll all but bet a few years from now the talk will be about the new "base development" around the bottom of the gondola
You're absolutely right. I think, few in town like the idea of huge muddy gravel parking lots in the middle of town. I'd personally love to see all the parking in those lots and others in town go underground with enough development on top to allow VR a fair profit. I'm hoping they sell some very close-in parking spaces to individuals as I'd definitely be a buyer.
|As far as Copper. I would guess that Copper sees far more Front Range folks than Breck does
If VR has underestimated the effect of the loss of Breck's free parking on front range pass buyers, Copper could see a massive increase in front range traffic along with a huge parking problem themselves. Maybe they'll end up buying Frisco's infamous 9.4 acres and putting in a big underground pay lot with a shuttle to Copper.
