As of Friday pm... 12 " base, 14" summit.

yes.. all my skis are waxed and ready... Hopefully, they won't do too much grooming... If they open on Wednesday, I will have to get up there and scout out the situation before folks load up for the weekend.

Lucky -

I just saw on another site that Chris Kastner, who has been the "Director of Skiing and Snowboarding" at Crystal Mt. since 1995 is now with Mt Hood Meadows. Search for "Kastner" on this page: http://skihood.com/cs/blogs/daveriley/default.aspx

Know anything about that? Any opinion?

Also, I don't see anything that suggests that Crystal started to carry out their expansion plans in the offseason, i.e. build new chair lifts. Given the good season Crystal had last year, I was thinking they'd have the money to get started on that and perhaps build at least one new lift in the offseason.

Thanks.

On the Ski Northwest TV show a few weeks ago they had hte PR person from Crystal on who said that they would be putting in the Northway lift in the summer of 2007, and continue with either the tram or hotel space the next summer.

I don't think they did anything over the off season for this year though.

I wouldn't ski too much off the groomed trails until the base hits 50" or so without rock skis. We may get that much snow this week though...

I was checking out the NW Avalanche Forecast at http://www.nwac.noaa.gov/products/SABNW and found that it is not really reporting yet. However someone left some poetry there....

Sonnet for Seven (2006/07)
(by Mark Moore)

I look all around me and know that it’s fall,
But I’m not yet concerned there’s no snow at all. (hardly any)
Whatever the weather, El Niño or not,
Don’t fret just yet about the cool gear you bought.

For blocking ridges and split flows may not last,
And the winter ahead could still be a blast.
For we have had deep powder during El Niños you know,
And all have marveled at the depth of the snow.

But this isn’t my forecast for winter to be,
As it could make me enemies for eternity.
It’s a plea to relax, be patient and wait,
For soon snow may cover the entire state.

It’s just that El Niños skew the odds toward drier,
With temps slightly warmer but not in the fryer.
Odds are high that you’ll find some good snow,
But you’ll have to be crafty and stay in the know.

Hopefully you won’t have to travel too far,
Or fly to a country that for a prez has a czar.
Know that there will be snow closer to home,
Just get ready to drive, hike and roam.

Its looking very good for this week, Baker is reporting 58" at Pan Dome, I bet Crystal has 40"+ by opening day.

The GV weather station is up and running...as is the one at Baker

I think it's accurate. Chris spends summers in the Hood River area and I think his lady lives there so it's a natural transition.

Crystal pushed the opening day to thurs. The rumor I heard about the sale (Crystal) turned out to be bogus.

Thanks for the heads up... I was already loading my skis.

From the Crystal Site:

Due to a short warm up on Wednesday we are pushing our opening day back to Thursday, November 16th. The temperatues will drop back down on Thursday and into the weekend bringing us more new snow! Hang in there...just 3 more days!! Stay tuned to our site for the latest updates.

Those slopes look so lonely and desolate. Since I have a midweek pass, I guess I can wait one more day for the lifts. Bet those seats will be cold, will wear lots of butt layers.

Here is a scouting report from a BC skier - Good Pics: http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing...p?topic=5514.0

Once again, thanks for the update!

I won't make it up until this weekend...so the delay doesn't bother me. Hopefully the snow will continue to fall.

At least we can get to the mountain, they don't know when Meadows is going to open!
